...no way I'd be in the garage at anything below 40.....I wheeled it more than once before the rebuild :)
Hows your M38A1 coming along Don?
Clint Point Mugu and Port Hueneme bases are 11 miles from here ;)

I was laying awake last night thinking about the things I need to finish and it struck me that I should weld up some plate on the front of the hangers for a convienient place to mount the tow bar. So off came the hangers for retrofit.
Now that I've got a good welding sunburn I'm going to change into shorts and begin rebuilding the OD and TC :)

So far I've learned that when all "looks" good inside the case but I do the "standard" rebuild anyway ... it would have really paid off fo me to have paid attention to the published tolerance standards for the major components before just shoving a full kit in it  Hope your's goes better (mine's finally resolved now) :)

    me too Steve;)
I finished putting the OD back together last night (the trick to the shift dogs was a long zip tie)...it had been painted black, I stripped it down bare
    [IMG]
I tore the TC case down today, and cleaned it all up good
    [IMG]
I bought a rebuild kit from Herm and I'm about half finished w/ reassembley . If I can get it put together in a reasonable amount of time tomorrow I'll begin bolting the motor/trans/TC/Od together for mounting :)

Finally finished the TC tonight....freakin all day job!. I put the intermidiate shaft in then saw 2 rollers on the bench :(. Took it back out but found nothing missing , guess I had put a couple old ones out for comparison. Put the output shaft together, had no endplay,,,,call Herm....did you grease the bearings and cups first? uh no.....do have have more shims? uh...in another TC I have. Take it all apart, grease bearings and cups....take other TC apart to get more shims. Put it together w/ all shims, still very little back lash
put it all back together and put gear lube on the bearings while rotating the assembley.....turns well albeit a bit snug
MAN I HOPE I GOT THIS RIGHT :)dead horse

There were 2 extra rollers in the kit I got from Herm too :) I threwup when I found them the next day too ;) (You can only get so many in there though :)

Numerically, how snug is it on the indicator? Any comments on the front output bushing install, as it may be related to freeness of movement? Interestingly, probably not recommended, you can alter the preload with a thicker gasket on the front output. If you are as unlucky as I, you may windup driving it for a while and have to reshim it. In retrospect, I'd go for a bit snug next time.

Any probs encountered with the OD?

not sure on the exact number...never could get the dial indicator set up correctly. The original shims were 1 thick and 1 medium. When installed there was zero movement. I removed 1 thick, 1 medium, 1 thin from the old TC.......sprayed all 5 w/ copper gasket spray and installed.....if I had to guess I'd say under .004 but more than .000 :)
I'll try it, but if it's obvious after running it that there's a problem I'll pull the rear output and add shims later.
The overdrive went together alright, the shift dogs were the only battle.....I greased the springs, and put a large ziptie around the whole thing centered on the dogs, finally slid into place.

If you have my luck (with a snug preload), after 200 miles the rear output will wobble, wipeout the seal and you'll yank a shim or two to achive perfect operation

the bushings and sleeves I ordered showed up today. I got stalled putting the motor/trans/Od together because the flywheel I purchased was wrong as well as the pilot bushing....correct units should be here tomorrow. I worked on mounting up the rear springs tonite....gained 4 1/4" height . I'm sure that will settle a few inches (I hope). I'll temp the front springs in place tomorrow night then work on getting the drivetrain together. Getting closer :)

Oh man I know that feeling. Same thing on a T18 build. Parts guy couldn't tell me for sure how many he shipped. Took it back apart just to be safe. Yep, they were extra. Ugh, I guess it's okay to smile now. :)

Eh, not sure I want orders there, but maybe some TDY would be nice. I was sent out to North Island a few years back, and yes indeed it was pretty nice. :) How far away are those Big Bear/Rubicon trips you guys take?

It should come down a good bit. Best way to break it in is to hit a snakey trail that really works the suspension like Ocotillo or something. You've probably got a front end loader and some extra dirt at the nursery - build something!

If it makes you feel better, I threw a 2.5-inch spring lift on my YJ yesterday and it's goofy tall as well. 'Bout 4.5-inches taller in the rear and 3.5 in the front. Looks stupid.

Big Bear is a little over 2 hours....Rubicon is a full day's drive....Glamis with dunes is just over 2 hours.....Truckhaven about 2 hours.....Anza Borrego just over an hour....just depends on what you want. :)

so after almost a week being sick as a dog I finally got back to the 6. With the help of my son I was able to get the front springs and axle mounted tonight. I started w/ 5* shims, we'll see how the caster looks after mounting the motor/trans et al.

Nice to have a rolling chassis again!
Gonna start on the hanging pedals and clutch master tomorrow.

Didn't know you were sick. Glad you're feeling better.

FYI - once the weight is on, dial the front axle in by caster - forget the pinion angle. That's what hubs are for.

    Lookin' good. Keep it up!

I bought a set of hangi ng pedals from a member here and set out on the install. The unit came out of a early 80's CJ. First thing was taking the housing that the pedals swing on and line them up w/ my master. It took redrilling the holes in the housing and making the hole for the plunger larger. Nice thing about the housing is it ties into the dash (with a little custom fab) which really strengthens the firewall as well. The plunger is differant than the mount that was on the pedal so I fabbed a bushing and drilled it out to size
    [IMG]
The pedals are about 4" to long so tomorrow I'll cut them down and reweld, then I can bolt up the brake plunger and start on the hydro clutch mount
I enjoy the garage time, but reinventing the wheel on every project is..........................well I need something to drink :)
