I really need to buy a mig welder with gas. This flux core welder doesn't show my true talent

try flipping the rear angle so its a triangle (think upside down v) add a few flat spots on the edge and clamp it down that way, less flex and tighter bends.

Got my winch mount made. Test fit went well. If memory serves me well, the 3 holes on each side of the winch on the frame is from a plow mount. Guess I should weld those up.

Best thing you can do for improving your welding is to buy a 4.5 inch grinder and some wheels and or a flap disk. You would be surprised how much better your work will be if you get every thing free of mil scale and impurities. Are you using an arc welder?

Flux core is basically arc welding where you dont need to replace the rods. I have not been able to do much better of a job that you with that process. Then again, I abandoned it when I got my first argon/co2 bottle and never looked back. It seems to be a lot easier to weld with gas than without.

What I would do with your current setup is get things bright and shiny and turn up the heat a bit and turn down the wire speed a bit. Make a nice hot flowey puddle and go from there. Try pushing the wire, dragging the wire, making little C's etc. Different techniques for different applications. Keep a little notebook of settings and how it works for you.

Man, this whole thread, I thought the avatar was the completed Jeep. Around a page or two ago, I was starting to think there weren't enough pages left for all the work left to be well-documented...then I realized this must not be done yet. Just wanted to thank you for all the great photos of the engine and carburetor, and probably other parts I'll be needing to reference as I try to get my '66 back to life. Don't know if I'll ever be able to give her a restoration like this but I hope to at least get her out in the nice weather when topless is warranted.

After reading your thread, I saw some things on my engine and thought I'd post some questions and clarifications here.

First, you're not the only one with an upturned lower radiator output.

This is all my Dauntless came with for spark plug cable routing. Not the nice double bracket system you have. Wonder if I can find those parts myself somewhere still?

This is where my coil was mounted when I got it. From what I saw in your build, your manifold has this mounting point as well but you don't have anything mounted there right?

Didn't realize I had this heat shield until I saw the discussion on it earlier in this thread. I don't believe I have the means to bolt up my fuel filter the way yours is, seems mine was designed to be mounted to the heat shield in this manner.

So, this is the cavity I believe where you installed your coil. You appear to have this large hole bracket in your photos too, any idea what it is for?
Also, your coolant sender seems to be on the passenger side of your manifold. Am I seeing correctly that mine is on the front instead of the side like yours?
Looked closer, seems like my heater core hose is running into where you put the coolant sender. Found some earlier pics in the thread where it appears your manifold just does not have a tapped location for a front coolant sender. Would like to know what your heater core hose routing is going to look like to compare.

Nevermind the rust, that'll be getting cleaned out and fixed shortly. Just wondering if you were just putting these items on the engine the way they were when you took it apart, or if there's a reference somewhere that I could use to double check where all these things go onto the block. Google seems to show a lot of other blocks with the coil where yours is, and nothing where I have mine. Maybe I will move it, always in the way of the carburetor anyway. Seems like it would be up against my coolant sender though. It does seem odd, the FSM schematic seems to depict the coil behind the distributor, not beside it, but those pics are definitely not precise as far as locations go.

I'll see if I can answer some of these questions.

You can find the correct spark plug routing brackets. I made a PDF for someone who wanted to make their own - Resources | ECJ5

This is what is supposed to be mounted where your coil is...It's called a "Dash Pot".

Your coil should be mounted where John's is...NOT next to the carb...Seems like a fire waiting to happen. Your water temp sender should be moved to the top of the manifold in order to put the coil back in its proper place.

The "large hole bracket" is for chaining up to an engine hoist.

Look at my engine pull and paint starting in the middle of my build thread. It may give you some other ideas on where things go. A lot of us have switched over to HEI distributors so you won't find a coil on my block. Focker's '71 CJ5 Drivable Build Pg 6

Is the top of the manifold location not where you have that water pump hose attached on yours? I suspect the coil might just fit in front of the existing sender location, I'll give it a shot anyway.

Guess I'm missing the dash pot. I'll see if I can find one of those. The manual describes how to adjust it, but not its function, which is sad because it goes into such depth on most other carburetor operations. It's just to lessen the shock to the carb system of suddenly disengaging the throttle?

Zoom in for ideas (I removed the heater and am not using one, so those hoses are absent from the pic).

Ok, looks like your manifold has a different location for the sender than mine does. It looks like John did his differently from this. Looks like his water pump to manifold hose is about 6 feet long in his video from Dec 12, so I'm curious what the rationale was there. Seems he has a similar setup to your manifold but with the sender and hose ports swapped around.

I sure wish my email alerts worked so I know when there is activity here, what is the question on the 6' hose ? I think you are looking at the heater hose ?
