SSDutch is still being fitted with a rollcage - one thing I didn't think about this week was something better for a fire extinguisher than the collection of zip-ties I had in Dutch.

Any bright ideas for a better fire extinguisher mount? I'm not sure yet (without seeing the finished cage) if it's be mounted upright behind the seats or somewhere else.

Have the bracket welded on maybe?

I found one at the local hardware store that is usually mounted on a wall and has a clamp to hold the extinguisher in. It has holes you could use for screws or possibly weld it to the cage. I just zip tied it to the cage and the covered the bracket and zip ties with electrical tape to match the rest.

You know another thought would be a large hose/banjo clamp.

I attached my metal fire extiguisher mount to the roll cage down tubebehind the driver seat using hose clamps. Out of the way for kids hands and easy to reach if I need it. Never have had to use it, thankfully, but it has survived many off road excursions.

I attached mine to the down tube of the rollbar behind the passenger seat. I chose the passenger seat due to the fact that in the event of a rollover or gas tank fire(underseat tank) the passenger side would be more likely to not be on fire.

I'm not worried about location - between the full cage and seat tie ins there will be plenty of options. In Dutch I had it right behind the driver's seat.

I'm more interested in an elegant looking mount...something like this w/o the $70 price tag:

Mike, whatever you use to secure the holder to the roll bar I would strongly suggest Not relying on the holder's clamp to hold the extinguisher in during Unusual Attitude Maneuvers. Keep the thing safety wired shut otherwise you could get "Boyinked" in the head. Happened to me in, of all things, a plane crash :(.

I would make something similar to this: [IMG]

Mike, but I can't find a cheap enough source for the aluminum material to make any money off of it at all. I mean I can make me one and save dollars but I can't make those things and sell them and make $8 a piece off of them and compete with his price. Material in that size range just gets to expensive. Would there be interest in these if they were cast where you could use just about any scrap aluminum and then machine the main body bore and the clamp surface?

Me thinks a fire extinguisher bracket has to serve to purposes: It has to be secure enough the cannister wont jump out, and just as important; you have to be able to remove it in a hurry. Call your local Firehouse and ask them for ideas. Chances are they will tell you to come down and they will give you one.

Those few seconds it takes to remove it from its holder, pull the pin and aim it are crucial. Figure 4 seconds of use for each pound of dry chemical with the smaller ones because the nozzle is so small. Larger extinguishers work for less seconds per pound, but put out alot more dry chem.

    Mike -

I really don't care what the bracket is made out of - I just like the design. Although there doesn't seem to be a quick release...unless I don't understand what I'm looking at.

I'd almost think hinging the two clamps together than having some kind of latch would be a better approach.

    I'm considering mounting two extinguishers....

Thats what I'm thinking also!!! Hinge one side and put a swivel eye and a round plastic knob on the other side that slides into a little "H" shaped hook then draw the knob up until tight.

I used a piece of chrome exhaust from a semi. Extinguisher slides right into it. Throw a bungee over the top and you're done.

i bought a cheap extinguisher from canadian tire that comes with a plastic holder for it. the holder has a quick relese on it, and i have taken it out of this bracket many times and thought to my self how easy it was to do so. that was until the day the jeep was on fire

the line for the oil pressure guage burst and sprayed oil all over the exhaust manifold and tail pipe. i lost oil pressure, acording to the guage, and smoke filled the jeep , so i pulled over in a he-double-hockey stick hurry. as soon as the jeep was stopped and turend off it burst into flames. try as i could i could not get that extinguisher from its bracket. flames were huge inside the jeep through the floor-boards and up the the outside of the jeep. i did manege to get the extinguisher out, but i barly got the pin out. when i did get the pin out i threw it so far it will never be found again. i did get the fire out though....... very scary experince.

this all happened after the jeep had been on the road for only two months after i had built it.

Mike thats actually a good price for extruded aluminum with slots and the brackets on the ends, you couldn't possibly make 1 like that for that price, I'm a tighta$$, thats why I make so much of my own stuff but even I would go for that!!

The early WWll jeeps mounted them by your feet to keep them out of the way and the sun.
