Thanks, I can't wait to pick her up - I know the Jeep is a she, but she still doesn't have a name.... I'm sure one will come to me as soon as I get her to her new home. The fun part will be loading her on my trailer. The owner has a tractor he was thinking he could push it up on trailer, but that makes me really nervous. Think I may try to use a come-along and pull her up little by little. Any of you guys have a suggestion on best way to get it on the trailer without a winch??
Also, I was thinking about running 15w 40 Rotella oil. Think that is the best way to go? or do you have a better oil recommendation since it's been sitting so long? How many quarts does the buick v6 take?
    Thanks

The carb will eventually need to be gone thru just for peace-of-mind, but initially you might want tap on the side of it a little bit to make sure the float is not stuck open which cause fuel to be spilled out all over the intake manifold when you start cranking it.

Thanks for the tip on tapping the carb a little to free up the float Grant. Probably wouldn't have thought of that. I'm sure it will need a rebuild, but it sure would be nice if it ran great.

I'm like a sponge. Keep throwing wisdom my way and I will try my best to absorb it all in. :D

WELL, I picked her up today! Pretty exciting trip. Only took about 6 1/2 hours round trip. About 5 hours of driving and 1 1/2 loading and riding down to courthouse to sign over the title and get it notarized. I've got it back at my office now and started pressure washing everything. Of course I only got about 1/3 of the way done and the stinkin nozzle broke. I am gonna leave it trailered and see if I can finish up pressure washing it later this evening. Since I just picked it up today I took a bunch of pics of just about every inch I could. So here is what I've got. Let me know if anything jumps out at you and/or looks alarming.

Here it is after loading her up. It turned out being relatively easy pushing her up on the trailer:)

What do you guys think of her? I paid $850 for her and she has a clean title. Also interesting as I thought the title would be for a Kaiser, but title shows as AMC. On Firewall it has Kaiser as manufacturer. Guess she was built by Kaiser, but was sold off the lot by AMC after they bought Kaiser out. Oh well, still a Kaiser jeep to me!:JEEP:

I'm going to have to do a rebuild and thorough cleaning of the carb before I can test out the engine. When I got it to my office I stood up and looked inside and saw some stinkin debris and a couple corn kernels inside the carb. Stinking mice must of dropped down in there. Am I screwed or should a cleaning be sufficient??? Also, the owner said it has a 231 buick V6 in it. How do I identify what engine I have? I see the numbers on it..........

    Thanks guys

I think you got a bargain. Mine looked like that about 20 years ago and it was my daily driver, so you have a great starting point. You've got some stock items on it that I had forgotten about I took them off so long ago. Heater/defrost ductwork. Heater controls. The 4-way flasher switch.

Thats not the original speedo though, should be single digit- 1-2-3-4 etc, not 10-20-30. Those didn't come out till 72. The mileage on the odometer is not accurate since it is not the original speedo.

But your cassette player has auto-eject! Now your cookin!

Good luck and keep us posted!

Oh and I just noticed is that a emer brake cable going to one of the rear wheels? If it is then maybe some previous owner upgraded this to 11" brakes which is a very good thing.

Thanks Grant for the comments and spotting some stuff I wouldn't have noticed, like the speedometer. That's a little bummer. I figured the actual mileage of the vehicle was unknown anyway, but that stinks it's missing the original speedo - I say, at this point, it is 42 years old and still fairly solid - mileage is just a number that really makes no difference to me at this point in time.

BTW, I can't wait to hook up a battery and test out that sweet auto eject cassette player!

OH, didn't notice, but I will have to check that out tomorrow. That would be a nice upgrade! :tea:

Congrates on pickin her up!!! As stated, great deal on the jeep and looks to be nice and solid...besides that muffler haha. As for your oil question, ask around to people using the 225 v6. 15-40 seems a bit heavy to me since thats what I run in my cummins diesel. I run 10-30 in my '72 cj5 but i also have a 304 not the dauntless v6. Whats your plans for the jeep?

Thanks! I am really excited about getting her running. As far as the engine goes.... I wish it was the original, but I believe it has a Buick 231 in her. At least that is what the PO told me. My first step is to find out for sure what engine I've got sitting in her. I believe the 231 and 225 dauntless are very similar and may have been a direct swap in. I believe it has original transmission/transfer case etc. Maybe someone here can help me figure out if it was a direct swap in for the 225. I'm gonna have to do some searchs to figure out exactly which engine I have. Anyone know of a site or thread with buick engine identification??
Once I figure out what I've got engine wise, I will buy a manual for it so I can figure out exactly what I'm looking at...
    My plans so far!
Numero Uno is to have fun with this project! With my 84 CJ7 it was cumbersome and draining to work on. It felt like a job and I don't want that. I want to tackle little issues one at a time and enjoy it. I love Jeeps and want this to be a fun build. I have no designated time frame on this CJ5(this will be a slow gradual build as I will hopefully have my 84 CJ7 running and getting me around by the end of the summer:D.
Numero Dos, I want to try keeping it as stock as possible, but I cannot drive a Jeep with stock size tires.... I'm thinking a minimum of 32 to 33" tires in the future(very very very distant future). Tires are the least of my concerns at the moment. Although the tires that are on it are dry rotted, they should do fine until I get her to a point where she is drivable.

So all that to say, my first priority is to get her running. I will probably tackle cleaning all the junk out of the carb, draining fluids, change plugs, checking fuel tank(it looks solid, but don't know if I should pull it out and check it for rust and debris on the inside or if I should just try siphoning all the old gas out and put some new fuel in it - what do you think??)

Now I just have to pick one of those items I just mentioned above and get to work. But I think I will start by figuring out what engine I've got in there....

Yep, that is my goal so far. Not planning on making this a rock crawler or anything extreme. Just a good offroad capable Jeep for mild use.

I did finish up pressure washing her today. Made a big difference getting all the crap and dust off it. Laid the windshield down for the first time on her.:) Can't wait to get her driving!

It's also coming in handy that I sell carports so she will have a dry place to sit and I can work on her while at work.... :D

Sounds like you got most of it figured out already. I would personally start with the fuel system and get that all cleaned out and taken care of. As for the tank, just pull it completely out and flush it the best you can. You would not beleive the amount of crap i had in my tank when i pulled it out to clean it. Literally had a few inches covering the entire bottom of the tank...gross. So ya, i would pull the tank, clean it the best you can, blow out all the fuel lines AFTER you disconnect them from the carb. Then i would pull the top of the carb off and check your float and bowl for garbage...if its clean, then i would put it all back together, dump some fresh fuel in and your good to go.

I definitely wouldn't say I've got it all figured out, but I appreciate the encouraging words friend. Thanks for the advise on the fuel tank. I took the fuel cap off and shook the Jeep. Couldn't hear any gas left in it so I'm hoping there isn't a leak underneath. Also visible was some surface rust inside. After I get the tank pulled and cleaned out, is there something you can line the inside with? Thought I heard someone mention that somewhere??? Maybe if I get time tomorrow I will pull the tank out and inspect it. :)

Did you just hook up your compressor to the fuel line to blow it out? That's what I am assuming...

yeah, I was reading a thread on this or the "other" forum about engine oil used. I run the 15w40 in my two 7.3 power stroke diesels and normally use 15w 30 for the gas engines. I was just curious because I had heard of people using the 15w 40 for the high zinc additive in it.....

For the fuel lines, just unhook from the carb and pull away as much as you can without bending the line then take a blower took (ones witht he rubber cone nose works the best) and stick it in the end from the tank and let her have it. For the tank lining, i know the newer fuel cells come coated with this foamy stuff but not sure about anything else. If the tank looks bad enough, may want to think about replacing it. I bought a factory replacement tank for my cj off ebay for purdy cheap.

Thanks for the tips 72CJ5! We will see if I have time to get the tank off and flushed today! Really don't want to replace the fuel tank, but I also don't want it giving me problems if it's nasty inside!

not much work done one her yet and she still has no name. I am starting to lean toward the engine being a 225 although I do not believe it is the original. Having trouble finding all the different casting #'s to identify it.... at least I know it's a buick V6 . I did get her rolling this morning! Got in her and rode her about 20ft backwards right off the trailer. Probably got her going 1 mph there for a second. I must admit that it was a very short ride, but a fun one - I couldn't help but dream about it running:drool:. Brakes are gonna have to be completely gone thru - already knew that, but just confirmed it again when I hoped in it and tested it out -

I did get her off the trailer and under her new carport home. She's kind of tilted down toward the drivers side. Add that to the ongoing list of items that need attention:violin:
Here she is this morning. Think I am going to remove and inspect gas tank if I have time today. We will see what happens from there.....

    SIDE NOTE!
I almost forgot! It is getting close to paint for my 84 CJ7 - No I don't have a build thread, but will post updates on it here. What do you guys think about this color? I am going with a gray color paint job. I'm thinking Camaro cyber gray metallic paint. with black bumper/brush guard and I'm trying to decide if I should go with black roll cage or paint it gray??? I like how the black and gray go together and think the black roll bar would look pretty sweet. here is a pic of the color I am probably going to go with. PS, I will not be doing the paint work.

Very true. I haven't made up my mind on the roll bars yet....

I got a little work done on the "Ole girl" today. May be her new name, but not sure how I like it yet. Just thought of it while writing this. Pulled the gas tank and drivers seat and as I already knew, the floor was pretty nasty. It is the worst spot on the jeep as far as rust goes. Kind of a bad design because all that mud and gunk gets behind and under the gas tank to make it rust out. Also the tank was empty and full of crude. Unless someone knows of a miracle cure for all the rust flakes inside the gas tank it looks like I will be in need of a new tank. How expensive are the replacement tanks on these?? Best place to find a deal on them? OH, but on the positive side, I found about 40 cents in loose change under the tank....;) Didn't have time to blow out the fuel lines yet. I think a new drivers side floor pan is in order before I replace the tank. Time to find a friend with welding skills. That ain't me. I guess I will move on to the carb next...

Oh and I identified the engine today as a 225 oddfire between 67'-74'. Still haven't figured out exact details on it but here are some pics of the casting numbers I found

Thanks for the links Grant! Ouch, $155 plus 18 shipping. I think I will make do with a temporary tank or something until I know for sure that the engine will crank. Anyone have a temporary trick to run the fuel lines to for testing out the engine? just run the fuel line to a plastic gas can?
