Looks like you guys are making good progress. Sure wish I had some of those hat channels for my niece's rig.

If you get too bound up with the 'spirits', I have a buddy in the FBI that works out of the Portland office :)

Hello, all. I'm new to the site and had a question if you all don't mind.

    Im a doughball... found this thread somehow on a google search and stumbled across your mentionings on the rear axle build. Could you offer a little more info;

    What were the shafts used?
What was the necessary machining? Just cut the spindle back down to fit inside of axle tube flange?
I imagine Google searches will turn up info on Cadillac brakes...

    Thanks for the help.

    David

Bet some of you thought I was going to let this thread die...

been a busy few months, not alot of time to work on the six, but a little too much time to think about it. I ended up listening to Dummy's advice about springs, and ended up ordering a set of 3.5" YJ springs from BDS. I was kind of hoping this would get me a few inches closer to the ground than the YJ springs SOA, but until things settle out, no change in height. I also decided to ditch the high steer, as the tie rod only had about 3" of up travel until it hit the frame. I sometime I wish I was better at taking advice, should have listened to Richard at R&P on my front end. With the backspace the slotted wheels I'm running have, the narrow track Dana 44 I put under it allowed me turn the wheels about a quarter turn before hitting the springs :(. So out with the narrow, in with the wide track. Figured while I'm here I'll ditch the lockright, and go full Detroit, might as well go high pinion too.

Since I'm kind of on a roll taking it apart again, I figured I would ditch the overdrive, and just have some gears setup that would get down the freeway. Say hello 4.56's, and good bye OD, one less thing to worry about breaking out on a trail. Oh yeah, decided to give the rear axle another try too. Got rid of the offset, and went with a thick wall HP Dana 44 built to72-75 CJ specs. Just unbolted all my floater stuff, and flopped it on the new axle. Again, got rid of the lockright, and put in a Powr Lok.

So, now I have a centered rear, what to do about the TC. well, I ended up cannibalizing an early bronco 20, and dropped off a box of parts with Nickmil. Should have a 2.46 to 1 Dana 20 before too long. Got some time to reinforce my firewall, hung pedals, booster and all that good stuff, got the DJ column bolted in and made a steering shaft out of some pto shafts I found. Oh yeah, finally got around to the HEI too.

Got around to working on the rear bumper last week. Got some recovery points put on, and the spare tire back on it. Found some YJ looking LED lights for the rear, am currently wondering how long it will take to scrape these off somewhere. Even managed to the the filler lines to the gas tank.

Got some seat frames built, and put the soft top on. Think thats all I got for now

He made progress since I was there today :)
This Jeep is gonna be seriously cool when it's done.
If he'd just listen to advice from those that went before
I'm actually jealous. He's made more progress in the last couple months on his than I've made on mine in over a year....

71 Commando PS bracket. I used a spud shaft to get it under/past the crossmember, no cutting, no drilling. The really cool bonus was not having to notch the DS motor mount to get the shaft to the DJ column.

Work is looking good John! At this rate, when you get her on the road you will still need the top!

What size tires did you go with? They look great on the Ren slots. Nice work!

Your project is looking great! I may have missed this info in an early post, but where did you find the 71 Commando PS -to-frame cast bracket?

    Thanks
