ha ha, that little safe is an awesome idea!!

 

I jacked up the front of the Jeep from the bumper so the suspension would hang, then put a bottle jack between the frame the the spring so I could force the springs to full droop. From there I was able to get a measurement for the front driveshaft. I also got it compressed to the bumpstop for the other measurement. Did the same for the rear. Off to the driveline shop in Reno on Monday.

 

Coming along very nicely!!!! Drivlines are 2nd on my list to get.

 

And I think I'm going to jump on the small bandwagon and steal your color, for rims and all, as well!! The more I look at it the more I like it with the black windshield and such.

Definately suits an old classic well.

 

PM me when you are ready for paint and I'll look up the color for you. It's made by Valspar. You have to have it mixed as it's not an "off the shelf" color.

 

Brown Santa brought me my spool a couple of days ago. I'm just waiting for the 30 spline axles to show up so I can make sure they fit before I put it in. Probably next week. Picking up my driveshafts tomorrow after having them both lengthened.

 

Finally finished the wiring. Also put the cage in today. It isn't bolted in yet as I am working on some plates to fit under the tub for the front legs so I can tie the front hoop into the frame. Also installed the driveshafts today. Everything looks good so far. I still need to order the radiator and I have a lot of little things to work on. I have one brakeline flair that's leaking that I have to redo. I've wrenched it to death and it's still dripping. Guess my dbl. flair sucks. But it's only one so that's not too big a deal. I have no love for brake fluid though. I'm still waiting on the rear axleshafts.I also welded some extensions on the braces that go from the firewall to the grill. I tried to find some braces from a '73 but had no luck. they probably wouldn't have worked with my '67 grill anyway. The front looks strange without the winch on it.

Thanks, guys. I'm starting to get excited. Really hoping to make a trip through the Rubicon before our get-together in August. I have a feeling this end of the trail will still be snowbound when the Jeep's done.

 

Wow, she is lookin good!!! Never saw a windshield frame a different color from the rest of the tub but I got to say that it looks fantastic...very mean look to it.

 

:iagree: Except my windshield is a '73. But my Jeep is registered as a '67..........

 

The wiring job under the hood looks AAA+. Your jeep looks great John and I'm sure enjoying this build.

Got the Detroit out and the spool in today. Well, actually yesterday and today. Here I setup the dial indicator to check the existing backlash on the ring and pinion.

Did you have to do any shimming, or was the backlash ok?

 

I had the spool in and out half a dozen times setting up the backlash and preload. Fortunately I was able to borrow a real nice bearing puller. I used setup bearings to get the backlash close, but that changed once I pressed on the actual bearings. I think it took me 3 or 4 more attemps to get it right. The manual says backlash should be .005 to .0010 I'm right at .007 so I'm happy with that. The preload on the bearings is nice and tight. I had to whack it pretty good with a 4lb deadblow mallet to get it seated. The spool certainly looks strange in there. Like there is something missing. I was corrected on the setup of the dial indicator after that first picture was shot and changed it to read on the other side of the ring gear teeth (the driven side) to get a more accurate reading. I had .0040 in shims on the ring gear side and .0026 in shims on the other side. Hey, I get to check one more thing off the list.
