I too hope it was the starter banging and not the rod. ;)

    MOP gone to Witchita. :(

I don't want to have it moving when I first start it not knowing the condition of it, otherwise I'd use the TJ and pull it, or roll it down the hill in the alley behind my house.

Well for me anyway, I can take mine to either here in town and they rebuild it in front of me. What I got on both of mine. When I get a glitche in it I'm on the door step again. Cost is reasonable too.

    Read my first post. :D

It's the solenoid, broke so bad when I tried to remove the + wire it broke the plastic type stuff on the end with the terminals more. You could see INSIDE the solenoid.

Not knowing the condition of the starter I figured I'd replace the whole unit.

Doubtful I'd be much luckier finding a solenoid for a 215/198 in Manhattan KS than a starter anyway. ;)

Soooo, you have the 198 stuffed in Eugene then??? Got a starter for one sitting downstairs right now. But its bolted up to the 215 at the moment. If you need any -other- spare parts for it let me know. ;)

Did, couple of times, thats why I suggested what I did. I was surprised how much stuff the have on hand and how much stuff crosses over. Last time on my M38A1 they took parts off a couple they had on the shelf and repaired it like I said right there in front of me. That way I know what they've done and if it's right.

Yeah. Right now I need a starter.

Other than that it's complete except for the air cleaner. ;)

It might cross over I suppose. They had a heckuva time figuring out what the starter was for to begin with since I didn't pay attention before I went in. Solenoid on it looks like nothing I've seen before on a GM.

Very different style than the 225.

To the best of my knowledge there's nothing close around there that does alternators. If there is I've missed it. :?

Huh. Funny there was more interest in the battery (boring) than the 198 (interesting).

I thought the GM starter solenoid was a $10 commodity item. Certainly I sold hundreds of them back in the day. As long as the tab that comes out of the starter is ok, the solenoid is an easy and common fix.

I thought the same thing too about the battery/198 thing Tim. ;)

I'd hafta look at it again but it didn't look like the one on the 225 starter they pulled out.

Anyone have a pic of a GM solenoid? I'll get a pic of the one I have.

Hmm, maybe it is. I just checked Autzone.com, it's listed as being in the store. 3 Brands of solenoid.

Gonna take the starter, have it tested and if it's ok, buy a new solenoid. :D

Hopefully the starter is good. I breifly thought about replacing just the solenoid but for the price of a 225 starter I figured I'd just get a new one. One track mind I tell ya. ;)

    Thanks guys.

    Update on the update.

    Engine's definitely not froze up.

Turns easily with a socket and breaker bar.

    Fuel pump works.

Starter is DOA. I bought a new solenoid and put it on. Wanted to test the starter first, they couldn't do that since the + terminal was broke off on the solenoid. So I had to purchase a new solenoid to test it myself.

Too bad. Starter solenoid is a good spare though.

You up to opening the starter and looking? All the contacts and such are in the solenoid - what did the tester do?

    Re: Eugene Update

Opened the starter, looked, all the contacts looked good. It's not spinning when the Bendix engages.

Tough to spin by hand. Most starters I've seen were fairly easy to spin, not much resistance. I had to use a screwdriver to pop this one around. That normal?

This one would turn the engine over then act like the battery was low...

I just took it and hooked it up, grounded it and checked to see what the bendix was/wasn't doing with it not in the bellhousing.

It enaged once, then didn't spin. Then wouldn't engage again. Took it apart, double checked everything, looked good. Just resistance to the shaft/bendix spinning.
