I had a new windshield installed at SafeLite.
The old glass was 50 years old and full of road pitting and 2 chips.
I've swapped out windshields in the past, but sitting in an air conditioned lobby watching the experts do it was worth a few dollars!
There was minor surface rust in the lower corners. They cleaned that up and primed the repair spots prior to installation.
It was $328 for glass, gasket, seal & labor.
Even though there were no "Jeep guys" there, they did appreciate the age and overall condition of the Jeep!
It's really amazing how nice it is to have clear glass again.

Been sitting like this for 3 weeks so I decided to finally fool with it. The last time I drove it there was a noise coming from the locking hub so I was looking into that and I need to add some starch so the tire will stop deflating overnight. Bought new buttons for the winch controls. I'll get them installed shortly and respool the cable.

I got the Jeep running today!!! After 8 whole months of being apart it’s finally running! Still needs steering parts, brakes bled, shocks, and a windshield to be driveable but a big milestone for sure! 23E76159-F7B7-4214-AC06-6AB5AE5B52D5.jpeg

Replaced the t-case shifter bushings on my CJ and changed the trans and t-case fluid on my Brother's CJ. Waiting on delivery of a Coolant Temp and fuel gauge from Auto Meter to put in there. I also pulled a radiator protector from behind the grille that looks like a piece of perforated metal. I think it's choking off air flow though the new radiator and the Jeep will run very close to overheating. I'll have to test later to see if that fixes it.

2 days ago, I brought the Jeep to the local pro shop, for the technical visit ( every 5 years, collector car).
Mickaël, the owner, a good one, had to check all, change oil, filters, grease and some other parts, check ignition, etc...
All was done. Unfortunately the technical control rejected my Jeep only for brake hoses too old, I have 2 months to show the Jeep with new brake hoses, no problem, just pay.
The shop is in the village, at 5 km walking.
My son was here, so I took my shoes and go.
On the way, there was cows sleeping. My son told me that one was very big, I said that it was an old mama.
    But that was not.
A big bull with horns... we walked past slowly, not taking care...
The, garage street, with the railway station at top of the street.
And the church place, mairie in front, a market day.
Weather was nice, the pastry shop was open. Nice life.

Not sure how or where I left my clutch fix stuff at but, a few more pics of the fix and some winch improvement stuff...

I had rebuilt the Girling clutch master cylinder, relocated it on the firewall and drilled the clutch pedal to achieve the correct pedal ratio, finally, after 3ish years of the way wrong ratio. The new location on the firewall, which so obviously coincides with the brake master cylinder. I never put 2 and 2 together. But it's a whole new JEEP now with the clutch easy to operate. It was bad difficult before. No one else could drive it really or wanted to anyway. That was sort of nice but sort of a bad thing too.

Now the wife can drive it.

Today, I cut 8' off the winch cable. The old Ramsey RE8000 calls for 1/4" wire rope but, years ago, for some reason, I opted for 5/16 to replace the old original cable. I had cut some off the supplied length because the winch can't hold as much 5/16 as it could 1/4. But it was still too much and when fully wound up, the excess cable rubbed the custom mount making it difficult to wind, or unwind sometimes. So, I figured before heading west to wheel with pros, I'd better fix this. I unwound the cable until the excess was no longer a problem. Measured the amount that was unspooled, then unspooled the drum completely and cut that extra 8' off the end. I ended up with about 58' of usable line. This does not include the first wrap on the drum. In this area, if you can't find something to hook to within that distance, well, you're probably not in this area.

Prior to this, I changed the gear oil in the winch gear housing. Ramsey never got back to me about what oil to use so I downloaded an old manual and found the info then, purchased what I hope is a suitable oil. The winch had been dripping a few drops of oil for a long time so I had no idea what the oil level might be. I thought it best just to drain it, completely, and refill with the specified amount. As it turns out, that little drip over all those years really didn't amount to much of a loss. But, now I have peace of mind that it's not low and I'll damage it.

Still not in love with this front powr lok. I wish I could find my notes. Turning radius with hubs locked and case in 2x is absurd, IMO. Literally like 35'-40' without doing a multi point turn. Should have just stuck a lock right in it maybe. There's a good chance the power lok will get ditched after this trip and maybe the whole dana 27 and replace with a 30 and lock right.

Maybe the powr lok just needs broken in. Almost no miles on it with hubs locked. Still, it seems pretty ridiculous to me.

Swapped locking hubs to early Selectro brand. Working better than the normal old style Warns but I'm a bit concerned with their strength, this the WTB for a set of Heavy Duty Selectros. The change had zero effect on the turning radius though. I though maybe the axle shafts were bottoming out inside the Warns and creating my problems with locking/unlocking of the hubs and the crazy bad steering issue.

Also cleaned up all the contacts and connections on the old Ramsey when I was changing the oil. Found out the hard way about the importance of this when I first inherited this set up. No fun spooling out 75' of cable to make a recovery only to find the winch doesn't power back in.

Added starch to my FR tire and added air to a couple of other tires. It was also out of gas so in went a couple gallons; low on oil too so in went a couple bottles of Lucas oil stabilizer . Of course, the battery was almost dead so I hooked up the battery charger, got impatient, then hooked up the Cherokee to expedite the starting process. After an hour of waiting it finally started. This is why I normally don't let old junk sit up.

It blew a nice mixture of oil and carbon all over those wheels.

Edit: The battery is toast. Installed my new winch switches and the winch only spools out. From what I've tested it's pointing towards the contactor. I saw coolant coming out from under a bolt head or two.

    More setbacks....

First AGM I've bought and I've had good luck with EverStart batteries in the past so I figured I'd take the chance. Install the battery, turn the switches on, and notice the voltage is low. I check the battery and it's good, turn the key, and the gauges turn off. I check all the fuses and make my way to the main power wire from my disconnect switch. I wiggle it around some and finally, it registers a few volts. Hmm. The crimps are good and no corrosion on the connectors. I pull hard on the connector and the wire breaks and green dust pours out. The entire wire is corroded. I checked another wire and it was the same way. Now I have to rewire half the jeep because this particular wire I used has corroded. I checked a few other wires that are of another brand and they're fine. I'm packing up to move and now I gotta hurry up and fix this. :banghead:

If you can find marine wire it is usually tinned to prevent internal corrosion I think.
Maybe someone with more knowledge about this could verify that is what you need.

All of my wire is good except this certain roll I started using wire off of. Not sure why it corroded but the rest didn't. I'm looking around right now at marine wire.

I hope someone else with more knowledge can verify this is what is needed. What little research I done suggest it would be a good overall wire for wet and corrosive environments.

Absolutely .....you can't go wrong with tinned wire . Used it at the Marina years ago. Look for 16 , 18 , & 24 gauge , though.

Good day... the idea was to move the hard-top and doors away, it is summer.
Unfortunately it rains, storms, but maybe in August... or September.
What is a Jeep if always with a hard-top!
That was the occasion to test my electric hoist, installed this winter. No more than 100€, was this a risk ?
So, with my son, I took the doors out. I had prepare a new place to stock them up..
Then, preparing the hard-top for going away.
    The hoist is working well.
I had prepare all to stay in position Jeep toit au sol.JPG Jeep portes en place.JPG Jeep en place.JPG Jeep câdle détendu.JPG Jeep attache toit.JPG Jeep bâché.JPG and park a car below.

New Batteries with hold downs installed.jpg Installed the new batteries and hold downs in the 54 M38A1. Tried to start and the starter bendix failed. Starter spins but doesn't engage. Had to make the hold downs since the huge military batteries are so expensive.
    One project leads to another.
