Nice and clean...I'd consider eating my cereal out of there.

I'd sure like to know what the shop did to booger up that bolt area?

Machine shop said that repair was under the grease. Said it was done by factory, I'm skeptical

Got the oil pump together. Decided to stay stock, no high pressure or high volume. Started by block sanding the mating surface's.

Middle spring is original, I used one on the left, 40 psi and new pressure valve.

Brushed some assembly lube in shaft housing

Filled the housing with petroleum jelly so it will prime at start up
    [IMG]

    New gears inserted

Then just scraped off excess with a straight edge.

Yes, I'm a gasket shellac compound guy

All buttoned up. Now waiting for more parts

    Donor rocker arms arrived
    [IMG]

Picked out the best rocker and assembled original with the new shaft
    [IMG]

Other side done. Next the intake manifold then stuck. Cars inc. Promised new fuel pump eccentric in a week. That was 2 1/2 weeks ago. Called today. No idea when its coming, I asked to send me the qt of buik green paint then. Out of stock until further notice, they have to refund my money. ...frustrated

John I think you have the rocker shafts on reversed. Looking at the pic showing the front of the engine (front of right head and timing chain) it shows the cotter pin rotated "IN" towards the valley. The proper direction is outward away from the engine. There is a notch in the end of the shaft that is to be angled outward as seen from the front on the passenger side. The other shaft notch will be seen from the drivers side rear and will be pointing outward as well. Is this the way you have it? The notch has to be correct to indicate the oil holes for the rockers are in the proper alignment.

    Walt

Thanks for watching me. This was confusing to me as the new shafts don't have notches and I didn't pay attention to the originals. So the oil holes In the shaft should be opposite to the hole location on rocker?

Lining up the shafts with notches as you say the oil holes point downward towards the lifters. I corrected mine. Thank you for keeping an eye out. Hopefully this is my only Mulligan

Great catch on this. I had a local shop build one for a 65 Buick I was working on and after I put the motor in and got it fired it bellowed out blue smoke like crazy. The engine builder told me to it was just the rings and to give it 100 miles or so to seat.
The owner of the car called me after 150 miles and said it was still smoking badly. I called the shop and it was closed down and the owner was in jail for having child porn on his computer. So with no warranty I had to troubleshoot the smoking engine myself. Pulled the valve covers and looked at the rocker shafts. Sure enough they were on backwards and the oil was not even reaching the rocker arms and push rods but was pouring out the holes and flooding the valve stem seals.
Corrected the problems and in less than five minutes all the smoke was gone and the car was running like a champ.

You bought a donor rocker assy (post #207) that shows the proper assembly. Did the donor shaft have the notch in one end?

    Walt,

This is a photo of my original before I took it apart. note the notch to the left of the cotter pin head. I used this for a reference after what you noticed

As seen above, the notch is pointing toward the valve end of the rocker which is solid (meaning no oil) and this should point the oil holes in the shaft toward the push rod end of the lifter which has the oil feed hole.

This is exactly why pix are encouraged! Great job Walt.

Here's some motivation (not that you need it).

So far the engine rebuild has been the most fun to me, I hope she runs good.

If you are as thorough on the tuning as the build, it should run very good.
