My CJ6 build thread

Discussion in 'Builds and Fabricators Forum' started by Im a doughball, Apr 30, 2011.

  1. Tires are 35 X12.5, would have liked to put some 34x9.5 swampers under it, but the BFG's were $100+ less a tire than the skinny ones.

  2. Well, not getting a whole lot done, especially with the count down the the Rubicon looming. managed to get brake/fuel lines run. Still need to get a few body mounts, wiring, and the pass side fender on, but its getting there. Kinda starting to look like a Jeep again though...

great thread... will be following as I plan my 6 build...

just one question... well just to clarify..

you are running 3.5" YJ lift springs and you cleared 35" tires with a SUA?
why did you end up ditching the SOA lift?

  4. 1" bodylift, slightly over lenght shackles, it sits at about the same height as the SOA did. SOA just turned out to be a pain in the rear. $$$ money for high steer, and when the high steer was on, the tie rod was 3-4" from the bottom of the frame, not ideal for a suspension that needs to flex. Just me being lazy, no SOA = no axle wrap/trac bar in the rear too. I felt pretty good about the BDS 3.5" springs after seeing Damon's(ragnar2xx2?) 3a run around on them. Just seemed like the path of least resistance.

  5. One last change before the Rubicon, no more project creep after this, I promise.

Figured I might as well build a motor...

That looks like a 300 Buick V8 (Possibly a 340). That will be a nice upgrade for you. Is it a runner or do you need to do a rebuild?

  7. Yeah its a 300. 64' factory 4v, with alum heads. Had it taken down the night I brought it home, block and heads have been at the machine shop for a week. Gonna ditch the factory pistons, 11 to 1 seemed a little excessive. Found the 2v pistons to go in, just waiting on a cam from Isky for it.

That will be a nice addition. V8 power is the best. How can you go wrong with 2 more cylinders of the legendary duantless V6.I was pretty sure it was a 300 from what looked like the aluminum intake. The aluminum heads are the good ones too with the larger intake ports and bigger valves. (Unfortunately the heads had cracking and warping issues back in the day) If your heads are still around today they are probably good. I have played around with a couple of 300 V8s as well as a 340 in the past with my 66 Buick Skylark. They are a good engine. Hot rod magazine did a buildup of one only a year or two ago and it made some good power. You can find the article online on their website. Good call on lowering the compression. No fun having to run premium gas all of the time. If you are boring it anyway, common 231 V6 pistons work nice with a small overbore. I have also seen guys build headers out of the V6 headers. Just have to add one more tube. With your Isky cam you should have a nice engine for your rig. Good luck on the project and have fun.

Should've kept silent. Now he's working on me to get my Jeep back up and running grumble grumble grumble
I stopped by today and progress is being made. Wiring is being run as we speak. Time for Him to post up about His own Jeep :).

This is a nice CJ6. Can't wait til I have a rolling chassis so I can really "feel" the progress. ;)

I'd forgotten, in his defense, his laptop died a horrible, painful death. He should be back up soon.

Was this on the road today at the Estacada I205 exit? Saw an old red CJ6 turning as I turned the other way and the wife said "hey look"
