A couple weeks ago the Jeep just quit running. At the time, I thought it was a clogged fuel filter, so I re-did the whole fuel line from the tank forward through the filter and pump. Still no start.

Looking elsewhere, I eventually peeked inside the distributor and the mechanical advance was broken at the spring mounts. Both of them. After getting a used dist at Willy's Works down the road and rebuilding it, it's still a no starter.

Looks like it's getting juice from the coil, so now I'm thinking the Pertronic ignition may have died.

Anyone have an experience like this?

Do you have power to the coil and power to the Pertronix, and pulse out of the the Pertronix @ the coil (-) ?

There is power to the coil and to the Pertronix, as they are both at the +. Also pulsing at the -. And spark from the center of the coil.

Yep. Didn't seem like a particularly strong spark but there was spark.

I did change coils a while back and put in an old Super Coil I had laying around. But I changed it back to a stock coil yesterday, thinking initially it was part of the problem. I wonder if I cooked the Pertronic? It ran well for a few weeks with the other coil before the no running part began.

And when it quit, it was just idling, then stopped.

If you have pulse at the coil the Pertronix is working.

Not sure. I'll check that tomorrow. I put on a new cap and rotor so there should be.

I don't think he had the distributor out since it quit running.

He replaced the original with the broken springs with a rebuilt he got from Willys Works.

    Timing could be off.

I did have the distributor out but it went back in the same way it came out. I just checked and have no spark at the plugs. No power to the + side of the coil. Steady power to the - side but no pulse. I thought I checked it earlier and got a pulse on the negative side. This is weird.

So what do you think now? Maybe the ignition switch for the no power to the + side? Try a new coil first, then change out the Pertronic?

Try a jumper wire from the (+) battery post to the (+) side of the coil and see if it will fire. If it runs, you have a problem in the primary (12v) circuit.

I'll check the coil power in the morning. Didn't think about jumping it. I heard somewhere that Pertronic guarantees their units for five years, so that's something to think about, if I can find the receipt. ;)

I jumped power to the + coil terminal but still nothing acts like it wants to start. Interesting that with the key off and power to the + side, the electric fuel pump runs. Must be on the same side of the ignition switch.

At this point it's looking more and more like a bad Pertronic unit. Anything else to check?
