I was wondering what cosmetic body changes, if there are any, between 1975 and 1976 up? I thought someone said they could spot the difference in photos, and it's become a nagging question on my mind.

The easiest difference to spot is the windshield frame leans farther back on a 76 and the wiper motor is mounted on the inside of the windshield frame. Also the windshield frame is narrower at the top.

From the exterior, the 76 Windshield isn't as vertical as the earlier models...and the shape is slightly different. Some minor things like tail lights, a 2 screw parking light on the grill, the size and shape of the roll bar is different, and the fuel filler.

About the only thing that doesn't change is the shape of the body's exterior shell. Even that has some minor changes (ie loss of the bow pockets).

    vestigal.

They were used for bows for the earliest soft tops for M38A1s and CJ-5s.

comestic change all as been already told. For mechanic there plenty of change between 75 and 76. Rear amc 20 2 piece axle (weaker than dana 44 earlier) They also come with a better frame, thay put an anti sway bar at the front, optionna disq brake until 1978 i think.
I think there's a better choice of aftermarket top after 1976.
They mechanical change you doesn't see them but they are very important when you're looking for a jeep cj5 cause lot of them are responsable of a better ride quality on a jeep.

That'd debatable. They started using a lighter gauge boxed frame. Better? Well, in the rust belt I'd have to say definitively no. Very few 76-86 CJ frames have survived the scourge of winter salt, most of them corroded from the inside out. There are thousands of 55-75 open C-channel CJ frames that have survived very well because they didn't trap crud inside the frame and are easier to wash out. The open channel frames flexed a lot more and are prone to cracking, but I think history will be the judge of which is better, when rust gets done having its way with them.

Sure you have the original tub?

The fuel filler moved to the rear in 1970.

Re linkage with the tailgate, I don't think so. The bow pockets are part of the side panel, which is separate from the solid back panel. The solid back panel was optional for all CJ-5s starting in 1973, and certainly those Jeeps had bow pockets.
