the red wire that you see goin to the coil, with the resister on it is what the switch goes to. all i can figure it that it charges the coil before starting.

Sounds like PO wired around a faulty ignition switch, no power to coil in start position.

Sounds to me like the wire from the R terminal on the solenoid isn't there or hooked up so a switch was put in to put 12V to the coil while cranking. Is there a balast resistor?

Ballast resistor output voltage should be 8..10 volts, BUT not over 10 or under 7 volts.
Better check your points, could be welded now.

i started it today and it started ....even after the motor warmed up it wasnt back firing. but it is delayed when you press the gas pedal almost like no gas. so im hoping when i rebuild all will be better.

Since it is your first time, allow for 6+ hours. Take your time and have a large absolutely clean area to work. As you remove parts, lay them out in order removed to help with putting everything back in the correct place (pictures may help). Read the instructions at least 2 times BEFORE you start and then follow them step by step as you work. Since most kits cover multiple models, determine which adjustments/gaskets (ex. float adjustment) apply to you. After you get familiar with your carb the whole project will be more like 2+/- hours.

The 2G is an extremely simple carb. Takes me about an hour to R&R and rebuild and adjust one, but I've done a few.;)

rebuilding a carb is no big deal. two things come to mind. #1 cleanliness, & #2 perfection with tolerances, specs etc.. beware of tightening the adj screws down tight, it will ruin the screw and the seat!! look for a groove in the screws, if there is one somebody done messed it up mehh

Turn them in until lightly seated, then back out 1 1/2 turns to start with.
