Here is an update. Just doing some painting and reassembly. The photos sort of tell the story.

Dumb question, but with a CJ6, you CAN run that roll bar with that gas tank?

Oh, and I wish my garage had 2 old jeeps in it, but I would probably be single

I am not sure of the source but the roll bar was made by RANCHO. It bolts to the floor behind the front seat.[IMG]

My wife wishes I did not have two old JEEPS in the garage. I keep telling her that it is temporary...one of them will be sold soon.

nice work.i had to cut out the lower round part of the tailgate because it was rusted so bad. reminds me that i should get a couple more tubes of seam sealer. what paint are you using? im using the krylon flat OD camo paint but i dont think it will last long on the floor.

Rustoleum red primer and 1919 camo green. It took more cans than I thought it would. I am anxious to get it outside to see if it has enough paint on it. Maybe this weekend.

I worked a little on finishing the windshield. I was going to use the original wiring but it was damaged by the windshield hinge. I ended up installing all new wiring and loom. Yes these are OEM top mount electric wipers. New gasket on the bottom of the frame. I still need to get a second wiper arm to replace one that was broken. I have a new knob for the switch but it is in a box somewhere. I will find it. Some day this JEEP will see day light.

Here is how I installed the fuel tank. I got this idea from a response someone posted on spacers for underseat fuel tanks. I used a black 36" tarp strap as spacers. I cut it in half and cut the ends off. I put the two lengths under the tank. I saved the ends to use as rubber washers for the mounting strap bolts. I also used another piece of rubber strap under the mounting strap. It fit pretty well. I forgot to look under the jeep to make sure the fuel supply lined up with the hole in the tub. Soooo I got to take it back out and move it about an inch. I went ahead and ran an external ground since I used the rubber straps as a spacer. I made my own return line by drilling a hole in the tank and putting a bung and nipple for the hose. This is an Omix tank & sending unit. I purchased my vented fuel cap from NAPA.

Today Mother's Day took priority so I didn't get to gas it up. Going to see the Rangers play the A's tomorrow so it may be a few days before I test it.

Got some gas and tried to start it. It took a bit to get fuel through the system but it would sputter when cranking but not run. Even though it was a new tank and fuel line I saw dirt swirling around in the fuel filter. Changed that out but still start while cranking but not run. THE SEARCH FEATURE WORKS. Found this advice from Walt in another post:

"If you connected the wire to the "starter side" of the solenoid, wouldn't the vehicle shut off as soon as you turned the key back to the "run" position?"
That is correct, it would. However that is a proper connection for a points system. This gives the coil the extra boost it needs during cranking. It is also a good trouble shooting tool. If the engine runs with this connection "while in the crank mode" but not when you return the key to the "on" position, then you know you are missing a connection from the ignition to the ballast or from the ballast to the coil.....

I checked for continuity in the ballast resistor and it was good....sometimes. Also checked for voltage at the coil with the key "on." Had voltage...sometimes. I also consistently had voltage at the switch side of the ballast resistor. Checked continuity of the wire from the ballast resistor to the coil and it was consistently good. Since the testing pointed to the ballast resistor (it was the original) I put a new one on and bumped the key. It fired right up. BIG THANKS FOR THE POST WALT!

While it idled I checked all things electrical. All lights, fuel gauge, amp light, oil pressure light were all good. New alternator putting out 13.9 volts but the temperature gauge is not functioning. I suspected it might not work as the needle is bent (how do you do that?). I will be taking that on next.

Backed it out of the garage this morning and let it idle a little while. The temp gauge DOES work. Gee... if I just had brakes....

Spent most of the day installing the top. This top is a Bestop Tigertop.
    Bestop® 51306-01 Tigertop™ in Black Vinyl for 55-81 Jeep® CJ-6
It went pretty much as described in the instructions. Adjustments were required since my instructions say it fits 55-81 CJ6. Since the windshield angles are different for that array of years I had to make a few adjustments to overcome the universality of the product. (is universality a word?) I adjusted the location of the clevis pins using the forward most hole instead of the center hole. This shortened the rear bow allowing the top to snap as designed. I also shortened the horizontal rod over the door so the front bow would be closer to the windshield. I also made the eye on the eye bolt closer to the windshield. It really made everything fit much better without having to destroy the top as I installed it.

I am so used to no top. It certainly looks different.
