Supertrooper's CJ5 build

i havent posted for awhile, the weather was been to hot lately and a new job has been taking up alot of time. it was finally nice out today so i dragged the frame on to the driveway today and started fixing the damaged spring hanger. i got most of the old patch removed and the rott cut out. in the prosses i killed another grinder . i was able to to get most of the brakets i wont need cut off.




i also welded nuts in the frame for the tranny crossmember in preperation for boxing the frame. when i get yet another grinder ill finish taking off the last couple of brackets then take the frame to get blasted.

 

i scored a cj7 15gal gas tank with skid plate for $60 on craigs list on sunday and i got the cross braces cutout and the skid plate mounted today.

 

Hey if anyone is interested, for closed knuckle use, when the old seals just won't hold gear oil anymore, and you don't want to use straight grease, I get what is called HP grease, used in knuckles of some 4wd farm tractors. New Holland and CaseIH have it at their dealerships in 1 quart jugs. Just in between solid grease, and gear oil. Also, remember to leave the U-joint seals off if you have closed knuckles that are full of oil/hp grease.

frame repairs are finally done and the frame is ready to go to the sand blasters. heres upsude down frame with the rusted out section patched.

Yeah, not really sure why my knuckle grease post went where it did. I'm sure I jazzed it up somehow. Very nice build, I'm enjoying following it.

 

i got the frame back from the sandblasters last weekend and spent the last few days boxing the frame rails. today i finished the welding and painted it black. i didnt have anyone to help move the frame around so i hung it up on my engine hoist by the spring hangers. i still need to box in the front frame horns and set up the saginaw mount but i wanted to get some paint on it since it was already starting to rust from the humidity. i also got the front and rear springs and the front axle installed. i cant wait to finally get this thing into a rolling chassis and powertrain installed.

 

i finished boxing the front frame horns and i got the saginaw box mount welded up. im glad the frame is done. :stout:

i finished the exhaust today. i used some 2 1/4" bends, strait tubing and a $20 muffler from the local FLAPS. the front drive shaft zerk is kinda close but it clears.

 

Your setup looks really good! That engine looks awesome, and I'm hoping my rebuild looks remotely as clean! One question though... wouldn't that junction of the exhaust between your right and left banks cause problems? I thought it was supposed to flow towards the exit?

 

My exhaust is routed in a very similar fashion, but that is not the factory method, don't know what, if any difference it makes.

 

my question was referring to the angle of the junction, as you can see in the diagram the exhaust curves to the rear. I think without the curve there might be problems with the smooth flow of exhaust, messing up your exhaust pulse and screwing with the tuning of your motor? I'm not a pro, just surmising
