Can't seem to find any info on what the newest sealers engine builders are using on their gaskets? It's been a long time since I've put one together, used to use the blue silicone, the black tar goop and a copper spray for the head gaskets......like I said it's been awhile!!!

    Thanks for your input, Dale

Apparently nobodys building engines any more???? Thought it was a simple question?

The head gasket has a little blue line around it so I'm guessing they don't need sealers? How 'bout valve gaskets, oil pan, waterpump etc.???

It really depends on the gasket - especially head gaskets. Some go on dry, some use a copper or similar head gasket spray, some use RTV, etc. For example, there are 3 or 4 different small-block Chevy head gaskets for an application I just built: some are coated and go on dry (my preference), some use spray, some sealant, etc. Best is to ask for your preference when buying and see if that is available. Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations to prevent leaks.

On stuff that uses a paper gasket I'll use either Edelbrock Gasgachinch (coat both sides of gasket and both sides of mating surfaces, allow to tack for at least 5 minutes, assemble), or Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket (apply same as Gasgacinch).

If it's a rubber gasket like modern valve cover I'll put 'em on dry. Only exception would be rubber 1-piece oil pan gasket and then I'll use a dab of RTV (I prefer Permatex Black) in the corners.

Also, in lieu of Permatex Black RTV I started using Permatex Right Stuff sealant. More expensive, but better: especially for drivetrain parts like diff covers and tranny pan gaskets.

For 2-piece aluminum gearbox cases and certain aluminum-to-aluminum engine components I may use Mopar anaerobic gasket maker. It's red and doesn't cure in the presence of oxygen. Again, very expensive. Permatex makes some also that's a bit less expensive and doesn't require a trip to the dealership.

On that gasket with the blue ring, double check. May still need sealant, but probably not.

Just keep in mind that some paper and cork gaskets are designed to absorb the fluid and expand sealing the joint. Gooping them in silicone will actually cause them to leak by preventing them from absorbing the fluid and the subsequent expansion.. I usually just use a dab of something to hold them in place and put em in dry.. Head gaskets is something you would have to refer to the OEM for the gasket..

    :iagree:

Your question was extremely open-ended with lots and lots of variables. Probably why you didn't get any immediate answers. One of the reasons I didn't reply......

:iagree: with Nick on the question, and I'am like Bubba I use a dab of permatex high tack gasket sealant item 80062 to hold the gasket in place and I only put on the side of the item that can be removed, it makes clean up easier down the road.Water, fuel pump, etc.

Understood Nickmil, sorry for being so vague, I should have spec'd a ford 302 with fel-pro (good ones ?) gaskets etc.
Dummy had the answers I was looking for! I had gone through the Summit cat. and that was of little help...should have called?!
I like the torque wrench also!

    Thanks, Dale
