Very nice build, looks great. Nothing wrong with a 232, good solid motor. :)

I used a wire brush with a grinder, and a small brush on a drilling machine for the difficult to reach places.
    And patience.....
I first stripped it completely, then cleaned it, assembled and then sprayed.

Thanks Rusty, I should be able to start the 232 after the rebuild in about 2 weeks time! Can't wait!

I made some more sloooow progress.
UNC and UNF bolts in South Africa is a bit of a problem. Most of the sizes are available, but only in black uncoated material. So I have to find the bolts, and then take them for plating, otherwise they simply rust in a weeks time.
And I had enough of rust to last me a long time!

The bonnet was a big mess, as the spare wheel was mounted on it, and the weight took its toll. The P.O. had it fixed, but IMHO they rather should have left it.The guy who's doing the bodywork for me at least got it sorted.I'll post a pic when it's done, it's a bit scary at the moment!

The two fenders are almost done, and they realy turned out nice. That guy has got more patience than I do!

If all goes well, I will install the engine this weekend. The gearbox, transfer case and propshafts are back in, the feul tank and feul lines done, and the steering rods and new tierods went in as well.

I will make a temporary plan with the wiring and radiator, and get a mechanical oil pressure gauge hooked up so that I can at least start her up and see if everything is fine with the new motor.

    Hold thumbs!!

    Getting close to starting!
I installed the engine this weekend....well twice actually!
The pilot bushing on crank were a little too small, so the gearbox input shaft bind on it. We took it out again and just "honed" it until the clearance were just right.
The other problem was the ring-gear that didn't fit as tight as it should, so we made a plan with a punch and hopefully strong enough locktite.....we'll see!
The rest went very well, and I managed to fit everything, even if it is only temporary to get the motor started.
    Hopefully tomorrow night!

    :p:p:p

    It's running sweeeet!
The carb and timing needs a little attention, but for the rest, it sounds beautiful!
Initially we had a bit of a problem priming the oil pump, but I used a sawed off screwdriver and a drilling machine through the distributor hole, and gave it a good turn. The oil pressure came up immediately!:)

Oh,yes, the ring gear is still holding up.

Now there is a couple of odds and ends to sort out, and then the loooong wait for the bodywork.

Thanks for all the advice so far.

The body work is getting along VERY SLOOOOWLY!
I received the Jeep stamped cowl repair patches, and the rear piece were taigate mounts on.
The tophats underneath are all rusted out, so I will have new ones bent up and replace them. The rear floor will either be replaced by a flat 2mm steel plate, or I will have 1.6mm bend with some "ribs" in them for strength.

Meanwhile I managed to find a realy bad pic of what my Jeep used to do in its previous life.( Note the spare on the bonnet)

    Thanks bigjohn.
The body is much worse than I thought, so it will take some time.
Realisticaly it will be better to scrap it and look for a better one, but I want to get THIS one back on the road.
All the floors needs to be replaced. From the back all the way to the firewall.
The plates for the new footwells and the tophats for the bodymounts are done, and in the process of being replaced.

I will see if I can post some pics of the body progress in the neer future.
The Jeep will never be the same again, but at least it will be back on the road, and on the trails again!

    Some more slow progress.
I'm busy with the venting windshield, getting all the brackets and fittings cleaned up, so that they can be plated and sprayed. The inside of the frame I've treated with rust converter, and then blocked of all the holes and flushed it with Tectyl, an automotive rust inhibitor.I've already put some undercoat on it, but here is a pic of the cleaning with paint stripper.

As mentioned before, I got hold of a set of intermediate seats, but they were in very bad shape. It basically had to be rebuild from the steel up, but they are almost done.I'm also thinking about fitting some slide rails for the driver seat, as it didn't have any. This is a righthand drive, so only the passenger seat have slide rails.I,m going to have them covered in black.

I also had a new dashpanel bent up, but it still needs some work and a couple of holes for switches before I can paint it.At least it not as full of holes as the old one!

The tub is a whole other story.Progress is slow, but hopefully with the summer almost here, things will speed up a bit.
The left front floor panel is done, and the new tophats fabricated ready for welding.

The vacuum wiper motors are serviced and re-greased, and they are working perfectly.I only have a small vacuum leak somewhere on one of them, which I picked up on with a vacuum pump and gauge, so I still need to find it.Although, I don,t think the leak is big enough to create problems. They are also only undercoated.I hope the wheather gives me a break this weakend for some spray painting.

That's it for now, hopefully things will start to speed up from now.

It's time to start to think about a colour for my Jeep.

I was thinking about something like this, or close to.
    Any comments?

The venting windshield is done, and I'm happy with it.:)
I had to replace the cowl rubber and the rubber for the "venting" part of the windshield.(Thanks to Dabella:beer:)
I also managed to break one of the windshields when installing it:(, so I decided to have new ones cut for both sides.

Well, this is going to be it from me for this year, I'm leaving for Namibia next week for a couple of days of dune driving and camping in the desert.
I wish you all a great December, and keep on Jeeping!
Thanks for all the help with my rustbucket.
    Okkie.

The inner frame I decided to spray with a Zinc couting before the top coat.

    The windshield looks great!

Have fun in Namibia. My favorite country in the entire world. Took my dad there for a little hunting and sightseeing trip in July, his first trip to Africa. He loved it. I go there 2-3 times a year for work (conservation of wildlife).

This is not for sensitive viewers!

We made some progress on the tub.It is still very rough, but after the past two months, I think we will save the tub and get it to decent shape again considering what it looked like!
There was a lot of aluminum riveted to all the rusted out holes, and just covered with body filler. When we removed all of that, there were very little tub left to work with.I think this Jeep took a swim in the sea by the looks of it!

The drivers side floor is almost gone.

The passenger side floor and hat channels replaced, and shortly after the driver side.

A lot of holes in this CJ6.

We cut out all the rust, and made some new plates to be welded in place.

It's looking a bit terrible, but nothing have been ground smooth yet. There is also a bit of heat shrinking to be done to get rid of some of the waviness.

The inner supports just in front of the door opening will also have to be replaced. The rear floor up to the front seats were removed, and ready for the new floor.

I had a floor bend from 1.6mm mild steel, and it does'nt look all that bad.A new one from America were just too expensive, so I had to make another plan.

The rear supports under the floor area had to be replaced as well.

The next step will be to weld the floor in place, and then move on to the left side of the tub. Some parts of the wheelhouses will need to be replaced as well. The toolbox also needs a lot of work, but will be saved.

It's very slow progress, but with each succesfull step, I'm getting more motivated for the next one.I just hope all turns out well with the tub!chainsawguy

Wow!!! Time really pass quickly when you're having fun!

    Time for an update again.
We struggled on with the bodywork, and in the meantime I "mothballed" the engine until we are done with the body.I don't want to glaze the pistons by idling it too much, it needs to be driven.
I also at this stage decided to do a pre-fit of the tub, to see if the tub still fits like it should, and so that we can make adjustments as needed.

    [IMG][/IMG]

While I had the time, I also pre-fit the dash, pedals and steering wheel to see what I would need if the day comes.

    [IMG][/IMG]

I didn't like the way the left mirror was looking, so I "cross drilled" the mounting holes so that the two mirrors mount and look the same.

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

With everything fitted and aligned, it was time to strip it all down again!

    [IMG][/IMG]

Time to get it to the paint shop for some much needed love!

    [IMG][/IMG]

After heatshrinking, cleaning, smoothing, grinding, the left side came out a little better than it was before!
    Now for the right side.

    [IMG][/IMG]

One of mounting points for the hood on the cowl was also rusted out, so we replaced that.

    [IMG][/IMG]

Heatshrunk on the righthand side. By this time I'm getting my confidence back....the tub will be O.K!

    [IMG][/IMG]

The right side done, and the fire wall cleaned up.
Now it is getting close!Almost time for the spray booth!

    [IMG][/IMG]

This was all done last year, so I will update my progress to the point where I'm at now.
