    Oh yeah...
    The guy was repowering a willys pickup. He got sick of the Super Hurricane and decided to re-do the powertrain. THe 465 was originally to be sandwiched between a GM 4.3 and a d18, but he was having a hard time getting parts for the D53 (?) in the rear. So he decided to go all out
    He's currently installing...
    Vortec 4.3
    NV4500
    D300
    custom D44 front with limited slip and disks
    Custom narrowed D60 rear with limited slip disks

    The D53 was a predecessor to the D60. I expect they were used in the later Utility Trucks ... I know they were used in the early J-trucks. 5 lug, roundish case like the D30, splined axles as I recall.

    And yes, parts are scarce. A D53 with a Power-Lock is a good setup, as long as it doesn't break.

    I rebuild my SM420 with new bearings and synchros and have no issues shifting. Only thing that slows shifting down is the long shifter throw from one gear to the next.

    I went through mine as well but didnt replace synchros as they looked fine. Guess I should have.... Its not really an issue for me.

    The 465 is a truck transmission. It's a monster. 175lbs of iron(cast, forged, etc). Way too huge to fit in a car tunnel, lol. The 420 is 40s tech, the 465 is 60s tech. They shift much better, but still a truck box. Measurably lowers your CG though:/ My .02

    420s are notorious for that 3rd gear synchro. As long as it works you have reason to be thankful.
