Hey guys, I've got a line on an SM465 with the Advance adapter for the D18/D20's.

It also looks, from the Novak-adapt site that It can be easily adapted to the AMC engines with a T-5/T-4 style bellhousing and a new bearing retainer.

So Does anyone here have any experience adapting the 465 to an AMC/D20 combo.

I'm drooling at the gearing I could have with that and my Tera-low. Mmmmm creepy gears.

I stuffed an sm420 in between a 258 and a dana300. it was a very easy swap, and is very similar to the sm465 swap. For the sm465, Novak will sell you a new bearing retainer, you then send that retainer and your bellhousing to have the center bore machined to fit the retainer. then drill new holes to bolt the two together. very easy. use an 80's model cj clutch.

I was reading bout needing hte 80's clutch disk, but when I look up the input shaft info for the T-15 and sm465, they ashould both be 10 spline, 1 and 1/8 diameter. So I'm not sure I'd need the new clutch disk. I dont want to have to buy a new clutch since I just replaced my clutch last year.

Koonie and I put the SM465 in his EB. Great tranny.
    Goferit. :)

If they're both 1 1/8 - 10, then the disc should be good. Check the input shaft tip dia, you may need a different pilot bushing.

It is different. Novak sells a custom bearing retainer that makes the trans fit the bell, and it come with the new pilot bushing. That kit runs about $125.

The guy who's selling the trans says its a sm465 from a t-ton chevy, a brand NIB Advance super short D18/20 adapter kit (7/8" thick), and a rebuild kit for the trans. All for 3 benjamins. SO I'm thinking for around $450 I could have a rebuilt granny tranny in my jeep, adapted to my teralow d20, for a total cralw ratio of 77:1

That is a steal. Adapter kit only is $475 and up.

Rebuild kit another $190 from Novak.

I wish I had found it first.

I have the 420 and love the low gear. The only drawback is you have to shift those old trans slowly. No such thing as speed shifting those things.

I have the SM465 in my 71' and love it. That is a screaming deal. I had my bell housing machined to fit the bearing retainer at a local machine shop for $25.

x2. i grind 3rd almost every time. But I thought it was just worn out. The transmission had been sitting outside for at least 5 years when i bought it. I just drained the water, filled it with oil, put it in, and drove it home. i did change the oil after about 75-100 miles. It needs a refresher bad.

I thought the SM465 was used in some muscle cars. If that's true I'd be surprised that a tranny without issues or wear would have trouble speed shifting. Or is the SM465 used in muscle cars different than those used in trucks? Or am I incorrect about being used in muscle cars?

Dad and I installed a SBC with SM465 in front of D20 in a 74 CJ5. It's a tight fit. That tranny is a big chunk.

According to Nick, The SR-4/T-4/T-5 bell is the same casting as the T-150/T-176 bell, but drilled differently. I think Novak is referring to the T-4 bell because they are advising that the SM4xx's are a good swap for the Jeeps that have these weaker transmissions as OE. However, if you use the Novak retainer, it will expect a retainer hole of a particular size, and the T-150/176 may be a different size.

I see what you are saying, and re reading the novak site, it says that
My thinking is this: my t15 bell is not going to work at all, so I need a bell either way. Chances are both the t176 and t4/5 bell are going to need to be drilled for the SM465. And the directions for a t4/5 bell and their retainer, (which I'm probably going to need anyway) are pretty simple. Also there is a guy in my local club selling a t4 bell and clutch release arm cheap.

i haven't come across such an animal yet, but that doesn't mean there aren't any. the 465 has the wrong gearing for a muscle car - too low, even with tall diff gears. 4:1 range is about the tallest used, rather than in the 6:1 range. ymmv.

I've seen the sm465 referred to as a Muncie SM465. Isn't there another transmission referred to as muncie 4 speed?

Grab it, and if it is trashed inside, I will give you $350 for the NIB adapter kit, and rebuild kit. I pay shipping.

    You make a quick $50.

    Sound like a deal???

    yup.

    m-20, m-21, and m-22. but they are high-geared. 1st is at 2.5 or 2.1. not like the sm465 or sm420.

picked it up last night. Came with a full rebuild kit with bearings and synchros. The adapter kit, the clean and free spinning trans (like new inside), and the transmission mounts and hardware. SCORE!

Can't access photobucket from work. I'll post pic tonight.
