I am getting ready to replace the rear axle pinion seal on my 1964 CJ5

What size is the nut that holds the yoke on.

The jeep is out of town and i want to make sure I have the correct size socket.

I think most of them are 1 3/16-not the most common socket.

Like duffer says - there's more than one size. Pretty sure I had to go buy a 1 3/16" socket.

You can buy a regular 1/2-inch non-impact socket at pretty much any autoparts store for under $20. Bummer if you've already got that size, but if you guess wrong at least you'll still be able to get it off. Yeah - sizes are all over the place. Usually 1-1/8 or 1-3/16.

on my 65 cj5, D44 its 1 1/8". i took a pair of vise grips and tightened it till i could slip it off the nut and measured the width of the jaws on a tape measure. (poor man's calipers)

I have found that a half inch drive socket works nearly every time but wouldn't work on the pinion nut on one of the d18's I have. I had to go borrow a 3/4" socket for that one.

Just sayin', sometimes they can be tough to get off.
