4.0 swap

I thought there was a fairly detailed thread about this, but after searching I can't seem to bring it up unless it was purged.

Simple question, can I take a head fom any year to do this, there were a few Cherokees with the 4.0 in the junk yard last time I was there, also I want to keep my carb setup so what should I look for in intake and exhuast manifold setups, I want to be able to scavange as much of this as possible.

I can't help much with this except to say contact Dummy (Christian Hazel). He had a lot of very good info regarding a 4.0 head using carburetion. There was a thread on this very subject a while back but it may have been pruned. I know he is working on something similar for his Jeep J-truck project.

 

Use a '91-'99 head. You can use your current 258 intake manifold and carburetor, but you'll need to use a 4.0L exhaust manifold.

The 4.0L head has water jacket holes that the 258/232 block doesn't. Use the 258 head gasket as a template to figure out which holes need to be filled in. Use water-soluble packing peanuts, jam them in the holes to be filled, and then put JB Weld or two-part epoxy in to seal them up. The coolant will dissolve the peanuts with no issues.

Thanks, I did search but all I could fnd were directions on how to do it, and I have a decent write up with slot of pics. But thank to y'all I know what years I need to look for.
