Okay thanks. Only problem is I've never welded before, but, afterall the purpose of getting the jeep was to learn on.

How much is a decent welder going to run me, and will it be too difficult to learn? (thanks for the input)

No experience with MIG, but I can gas weld.

From what I understand, MIG is pretty easy and you can make serviceable welds with a little practice. Get an old fender, cut it up and weld it back together.

Go to Cyberweld and look at the least expensive Hobarts and Millers. Miller is the premium brand, and their 110V welder is about $650. My brother has one, which he uses to repair Triumph cars, and he likes it a lot. The Hobart is $355. With either, you'll want shielding gas (which means additional expense)... you can weld with flux wire and no gas, but gas will give you a nicer weld.

Would one of these ebay kits that have all stainless bolts and other hardware labeled and bagged be worth the money in ya'lls opinions?

Yep - I bought one and have been using it for re-assembly on SSDutch. If you want stainless you can't beat the price.

I'm gonna concur with the other posters, fix any obvious issues, and drive the jeep for a while. No point in spending on goodies you don't have an immediate need for. Trust me here, your jeep will help you spend money and time soon enough. Save the $$ for the issues you will discover after driving a while.

In order to make the best use of a SS fastener kit, you'll have to get into a complete frame off resto, and your jeep looks to be quite serviceable as it sits.

The fever is a wonderful thing, though.

    Okay, thanks ya'll.

Any suggestions or major things I should check before I start taking it on the road then? (Other than the brakes)

Tires are ok aren't they? I need to get new ones for my CJ, as they are cracked and I am afraid that it'll rollover on me if a blow one out. Other than that you're looking pretty good IMHO.

Yeah, tires should have another 5-10k of tread left. And that's good. I thought I might have to do some serious work to get it road safe. Thanks.

Oh. Should I run sea foam through it?

Couldn't hurt. May want to check all fuel lines especially anything rubber. My CJ sat unused for 8-10 years, and I had to replace all the rubber parts on my jeep- fuel filler hose, fuel vent hose, fuel lines from the steel gas lines to carb, fuel return lines, fuel return vent lines to the tank etc etc. Everthing but the fuel vent and filler hoses can be bought at your FNAP store, and are cheap (by the foot) too.

EDIT: er, I've been looking at those pictures of your jeep and have decided that it's going to be too much work for you to mess with- so, I'll take it off your hands for, say $50, er that is, 50 bucks for me to haul it away for you...Thanks!

This thing isn't leaving my site for years. But thanks for the offer. haha. I can't wait to get under it and start messing around some tonight.

This is nothing like my 02 tahoe I've been working on. I can only learn so much from a truck already in good shape.

Tread is good but check for drying and cracking on the sidewalls. Tires can deteriorate just sitting unused.

Nice Jeep. My 74 was Fairway Green Poly too, when new. Nice color. Driving manual brakes takes some getting used to if you've only had power brakes before. You can get used to "pumping" the brakes to build up brake pressure, something which you never do with manual brakes. You can also feather the brakes to avoid lockup, sort of an old school ABS system. You just have to get used to feeling when the brakes are about to lock and then backing off slightly. Definitely a technique to it.

Nice find. I have a 75. As otheres have said, get it road/offroad worthy and dependable first. Hands down the best [and first] major mod I did was the addition of a granny gear 4 speed.

I'm gonna have a lot more pictures coming up tonight. And I think the trans is gonna need replacing. Its becoming more and more difficult to get into first and reverse and its making an awful clunk and grinding noise. Is this transmission?
