Just a couple of quick questions. My rubber glass seal for the windshield glass is two parts, the seal and a spline. When does the spline get installed? (It must be before the windshield goes in, I don't see any way you could get it in after?) What is the spline for? (It did make removing the glass easier) Seam at top or bottom? (I guess bottom).
    Thanks in advance:)

I believe the spline is installed last, after the seal is in the frame and the glass is in the seal. the spline is supposed to lock the seal in place and make it seal tight to the glass.

Yes, it's a lock strip. Goes in after.

I've alway installed the glass with the lock strip in the rubber. (Just like that web site shows.) If not. Just how would you install it?

Oh. Did you notice they put the rubbers seal in backwards? R)

Exactly!, when the seal is in place the groove the spline (lock strip) fits in is so tight I really don't see any way to put it in.(I put silicone spray in and it is very, very tight) But back to one of my original questions why is it there. I have put many windshields in and none of the gaskets had a spline. Just trying to figure it out, maybe because it's flat, and when folded down the glass needs extra holding power, just a thought.

Mine is installed with the lock strip to the out side.

Little bit of dish soap on the lock strip and just ease it out. Then the windshield will just pop out. (Mine is plexiglass) Towel or some thing to protect the paint finish.

Put the seal on the new glass, ease it into position. Use soaped bailing twine in the groove ot the seal that the metal frame sets into all the way around, over lapping at either the top or bottom center.

Seems one guy could do it by using some dish soap on the lockstrip and a pointing tool for doing chimney brick work to ease the strip in. I'm not worried about sitting on my hood, cause it is all dinged up anyway. Doing the whole thing from the out side means just removing the wiper arms on my 'Sixty.

Shouldn't be all that hard. I replaced the windshield in my wife's 73 VW Squareback by myself that way. No big deal! Finding a replacement was the hard part.

Lock strip in before you put the glass in the w/s frame. You'll poke your eye out trying to fit the lock strip in the seal when the glass is already installed. That little pointy tool you'll use to get the lock strip in goes right for the soft flesh when it slips out. BTDT on other rigs. Follow the above instructions for installing.

Lock strip goes in after the glass and seal is installed. Reason is, with the groove the lock strip goes in empty it allows more flexibility of the seal to get the glass in without flexing and cracking/breaking it. then you use dish soap, silicone spray, whatever to lubricate the lock strip and a pointy but dull tool (old rounded small screwdriver works good for this) to install the lock strip. The lock strip goes towards the outside of the vehicle by the way due to the way the seal flexes when the wind blows against it. Keeps from pushing the glass inside driving down the road. I've installed tons of heavy equipment glass using that same style of seal and that's the way they were always installed, even from the factories. My glass guy who is well known in this area told me that's the way it's supposed to be also confirming the way we used to do it. I don't know how you guys got the glass installed with the lock strip in place without cracking the glass.......

:? I put the seal around glass with the lock strip installed. Then install the glass and seal with the rope like they did on that web site.

Now the split glass is a little harder to do, especially if you have old hard rubber.

lock strip goes in last. i have a tool from my dads glass shop, when we used to do windshields about 30 years ago. it sort of looks like a pigs tail with a little ball on the end,it hooks around the spline and when you pull it it locks the spline right in. soap is your friend here. be very careful using any metal tools around glass, always try to use plastic or wood if you can.

Nickmil and Krawler have my vote.

Plus it just made visual sense to me to slide the rubber seal onto the glass, then the whole works into the frame without the locking strip in place. Much more give to the seal when you go to slide it onto the frame. then soap up the locking strip and yur gud ol' fashioned wooden dowell or what ever and just slip the strip into place. Mine has the ends at the top, really not sure if top or bottom is proper, just so long as it holds. Plus the PO must a screwed up somehow. The locking strip on mine is cut in two and is just long enough to go around the two sets of corners with nothing in the middle top or bottom. Not right , but I haven't had any leaks to speak of, so I am NOT going to fix it - it ain't broke yet! :hurrican::):coffee:

if you have your old piece any good glass shop should be able to cut a new one using the old one as a pattern. it is just 1/4 inch lamanated glass, i used bronze glass on mine.some states might require a logo stamp in the corner to prove its safety glass. i was taught to always put splices in glazing rubber to the top because water runs down, although in hurricanes here i've seen it rain up.

I was looking a little closer to the directions on the link. Am I missing something? As I see it the rubber seal in the example does not use a spline. Is the spline only used on earlier CJs?

That is a late model, no spline. When I did mine I put the gasket in, then the glass and finally the spline. Lots of soap and a little patience.
