    I just bought a six (6) piece light indicator set off of ebay for my 74 CJ. The ones currently in my Jeep have painted over. Can somebody please let me know where these six (6) indicators should go in order?

    That's not a 74 CJ-5 in the picture unless someone has swapped a 76+ dash windshield and pedals.

    How will I be able to tell? The VIN # on the firewall calls it out as a 74 CJ-5 and the windshield measures 59".

    Any help is appreciated.

    #1 Pre 76 the frame stays straight from the front to the rear. 76 and newwer had new style frame that widens in the rear.

    #2 Didn't they add 2" to the wheelbase in 76 to go to 83.5". ? -Someone else chime in.

    There are more but it's late :beer::beer:

    Here is a 74 dash. Notice the tape on the indicator lights.

    In '72 they lengthened the wheel base. CJ-5's had the same wheel base at 81" from '54-'71 then the same wheel base at 83.5"-84" from '72-'83. Easiest way to id a '76 windshield frame is they have the motor and cover on the inside of the Jeep. '67-'75 were on the outside. The '76 up is also narrower at the top than the bottom where the earlier ones have straight sides. The '76 up also lays back farther. Nickmil

    As far as the dash is concerned, the heater controls are in the dash on the 76+, while the intermediates are mounted below the dash in a plastic pod. The gauges are in different locations too. So the indicators are not in the same places.

    Do you have a factory steel tub? (ie not a fiberglass replacement?) If so, do you have a toolbox under the passenger seat? The toolbox was eliminated on 76+ models, while every CJ-5 from 55-75 had one under the right seat.

    Those are '76-on floor panels and pedals too. Definitely not a '74 tub. Take a picture lying on the ground at the back of the Jeep, looking under - the rear axle and frame will ID the chassis.

    Where would I find the motor build date? How would I be able to distinguish if it has the 232 or 258 engine?

    Thanks for the help in advance.

    Ramseybanga - I have the same deal. I have a tub with a 74 vin plate but the dash is a 76+ and the frame and (I think) all running gear is 76-77. But the tub is a 74 (toolbox under the pass. seat)

    Check the frame. IF the frame is a ladder (sides a parallel front to back) the frame is pre 76. In 76 the rear of the frame was made widder than the front part of the frame.

    Dash is definately a 76 up. Windshield looks like a 76 and up.

    As mentioned above, the tool box under the passanger seat is a dead give away for a pre 76 cj.

    Or if you live near Orange park or Regency I can stop by and take a quick peek. Let em know if it would help.........

    Looks like it's been painted over on your Jeep, but there was an original emissions sticker on the radiator support just in front of the top radiator tank to the left of the hood latch. It would tell what your original engine was, which of course wouldn't tell you what engine it currently has, but might be nice to know. If it's still there under the paint you might be able to see a square outline of it and rub the paint off gently with lacquer thinner or something and be able to read it. It's the one that says the year, engine size, spark plug gap, idle setting, etc.

    O.K. the sticker in front of the radiator is not there. It has been removed.

    On the firewall, the following information is on the plate:

    Jeep Corporation
    Toledo Ohio U S
    J235845
    5
    J4F835TA29669

    On the enigine, I found a plate on the passenger side that reads:

    004C21

    On the engine, driver side their is a number that reads:

    3235077

    Can anyone make out the numbers based off the engine?

    I will post the a picture of the rear axle later on.

    Their is not a tool box under the passenger side and the frame does widen at the rear.

    Thanks for everyones help so far.

    Post 76 by what you have

    By VIN plate:
    J =Jeep
    4 =1974
    F =Toledo
    83= CJ5
    5 =Open Body
    T =3750 GVW
    A =258
    29669 =sn

    Vin plate has been switched. What does the MSO say?

    I dont know the decode on the 258 - someone will post.

    Did you read the thread posted above?

    Engine is a 2V 258 built on 21 APR 1980. "C" means 2-barrel carburetor 258 cid, regular compression.

    323... is a casting number, not meaningful.

    I'll take a stab at the the pass side engine code.

    0 = 1976
    04= April
    c = 258 2v
    21 = 21st day

    Well, one good thing is, instead of trying to find parts for a '74 intermediate, you will be able to find the more plentiful '76+ parts. You will find all kinds of goodies and bling (are they still saying 'Bling'?) in all the magazines and off-road shops for your rig.

    Here is the picture of the rear axle.

    My Jeep has a three (3) speed. Was the three (3) speed available on 80 + plus years?
