WOW this is the finenest example of an unmolested ecj5 that I have seen in years. Most jeeps in wtx are thrashed beyond belief by the time they are the the age of yours. Once again a very nice find.

Welcome from Oklahoma. Very nice original 5. I kept mine original and sure am glad I did. My vote is that you do the same and I agree on the calendar choice.

No kidding! I can't believe how cherry that is! The front bumper is even straight, that ain't right.

I'd leave 'er alone and enjoy it as is, except I'd probably upgrade the brakes to 11" and a dual chamber m/c, and most likely the Pertronix electronic ignition. You can't see those changes, and they would make it much safer and more reliable. Leave the F-head engine and drivetrain in it too. That ol' girl oughta go anywhere and do anything you'd want to do. If not, get a second Jeep, but keep this one cherry!

    JMHO.

After 3 and a half years of work, I still can't say that mine is that nice. Very impressive JEEP you have there! My two cents would be to echo the other guys' suggestions to only make safety and reliability-type mods that don't show. I'd be very proud if my JEEP looked as good as yours - without any mods.

Wow, Thanks Gents, I have to say, having been a pickupman my whole life, I wasn't sure about the Jeep, my wife was the real push behind this, (OK, not that big of a push, I AM a truck nut) But I really like the little thing, we have already put almost 500 miles on him! I am going to stay stock, with the exception of wheels and tires, and I will look into the brake upgrades to do. So what would be a good value to insure him for? What is he worth unmolested as he sits?
I have 3 older trucks, and I really love the simplicity of them and Willy, nothing fancy to them, just utilitarian, and you actually get to DRIVE them, no sensors or processors making choices for you.
So yes, I now have become a JEEPMAN.
Again, thanks for all the input, I appreciate it, and I will be searching and asking more as I get into it.
I am taking Willy out tonight to go deer/bear hunting this weekend, I loaded him up last night with sleeping bag and essentials (beer/beans and such!) should be fun.
How big is the stock fuel tank? 6 gal or so? what would be the stock gearing in the axles? Sorry, thousand of ?s buzzing in the brain.

Isn't the stock under the seat tank 9 gallons? It's pretty small. I've got a rear tank in mine so I don't know what the under the seat one is.

It's either 10 or 10.5 gallons capacity, I don't remember which is correct.

The 215's weren't the original size on it. They are smaller. That's what I use for street driving. (Offroaders are 30x9.5x15) The right size would be 255's or 265's. they are closer to the 7.00x15's (or maybe 7.00x, 7.50x, or even 16's) that came on the JEEP originally.

Stock tank under the seat is 10 gallons, and your gearing most likely is 5.38 to 1. options were 4.57 (i think) and 4.27. And an over drive from hermtheoverdriveguy.com would make the 50mph run to town more comfortable. Plus it looks like someone obsconded with your two way radio antenna on the back. Radio shack has cover plates that help make that less noticeable. :):hurrican::flag::coffee:

In the first picture, does any one here have any idea what the little notch in the hood about halfway back at fender height is for? Got one on mine too, just haven't found any thing that would fit there.

Beautiful machine! You could get top dollar for that one at the Barrett-Jackson car auction here in Phoenix. (I wouldn't do it, unless I was extremely hurting for money, myself).

Jeep's were designed to be mini pick up trucks ;) Mine has more ribbs in the bed from all the cargo than I can count, so indeed you have a pickup of sorts ;)

I was told the notch on the hood was for an optional snorkel for the intake.

That's the big half-round notch on the right side of the hood, towards the firewall/cowling. A leftover feature from the M38A1 military Jeeps. There's also a small thumb-sized notch on the left side of the hood with a matching notch in the fender, towards the front. I've heard what that's for, but I can't recall right now.

For the wire that runs to the blackout light on the fender.
