Yea I've debated it for awhile...but when my son showed such a strong opinion on the matter it was easier to do. This set of wheels will eventually be the "wheeling only set", .....when I can find some Cyclone style wheels I'll mate them w/ a 31/10.50 AT type tire for DD duties.

so after forgetting to put the latches on the hood a few weeks ago I lost it doing 50mph....it sailed clear, then was runn over several times by semi's

Fortunatly I had a extra hood from the donor M38A1, but it needed a lot of body prep
    [IMG]
working on it after work I finally finished the prep last night, and sprayed it this morning (thank goodness I had a quart of paint left)

I picked up a metal chop saw at the HF lot sale this morning early so the winch mount is next on the agenda:)

    So Jim, I'm just curious...
Did you hot rod the Jeep to work then with no hood?
    Looking good!

yup:)...the 289 looks good in there....my boy suggested we just leave the hood offR)

yes the hood lifted right outta the hinges and never touched anything until it hit the pavement....working on a safety latch as we speak

Something similar to that happened to my dad years ago. He was riding around with the windshield folded down and forgot to latch the hood. Well, when the air got under it and flung it open, the windshield went with it. His hand was at the 12 o'clock position on the steering wheel and busted right through the glass! Needless to say, that was a painful lesson. I bet that semi behind you was a bit surprised when it happened!

Dad used to yell at us that if the hood is down, it's latched the moment it goes down.

Mom left it unlatched once  Glad it wasn't me :)

Thanks for the prop up guys....hopefully someone will learn from my stupid mistake
I've had a winch and mount plate for several months so I took advantage of the extra daylight and got started on install...cut the plate to size and mocked up
    [IMG]
I decided to weld the plate flush with the bumper, and used some 3/8"x2"x5" plate to tie into frame rails and fill the gap
    [IMG]
I'm gonna use the arc welder at work to weld the plate solid to the bumper
    [IMG]
This seemed like the easiest solution around my saginaw box, and still be plenty strong

so I layed some metal to my bumper using the big Miller and 7018 1/8" rod at work
    [IMG]
sorry bout the crappy pic, but I filled in between bumper and mount solid, then a couple passes on the filler plate to the frame....I then did some prep to try and make the front of bumper and winch plate look like one unit
    [IMG]
A little massaging of angles and some paint, we're about ready for the winch:)

I surely enjoy my time in the garage:D

Got the winch mounted, tested it out....ready for duty.
I got a HF 8000lb w/ the mount plate for $150 at one of their parking lot sales. I figure it won't see much use, if the need arises I'll upgrade in the future.
need to get some d-rings, and some recovery accessories...
Next up the rear tank I just got, and spare tire carrier, fitting in the R+P change to the D30 somewhere in there.

picked up a D30 w/ a lockright and 4.27 gears last weekend in Sacramento, so started the swap today
    [IMG]
this is my #1 helper getting things prepped to pull the axle
    [IMG]
after pulling the calipers/shocks/driveline etc we put the wheels back on, unbolted the springs and rolled the whole assembly out
    [IMG]
my helper getting the springs off the old axle.....my wife informed me 2 hours into the project that we had dinner out plans, so we bolted up the new axle and rolled it back into the garage
    [IMG]
about 4 1/2 hours to this point,,,,put in new bushings/ grade 5 hardware.....need to swap on the discs in favor of the drums, torque everything, put new fluids

Dang, Jim. That is lookin' nice. :)

Pic request: Whenever you get some time, could you please go back and update your picture links at the front of the build? Some of them must be outdated and not showing. Would be nice to see your progress from start to finish. Thanks.
