The previous owner had hacked up the firewall and the top piece of the transmission cover

Yup, thats what I've been doing on Tonk for the last while, I'm finally getting good enough at it that I'm at the stage where I'm filling in more old holes than I am burning new ones:rofl:

A lot of guys have a wire feed welder, but since all I ever had was a tourch
it only takes a few minutes to get back in the hang of it, send coat hangers!

    R) I haven't welded with coat hangers in years. Be careful of some hangers that have some sort of coating on them. Kind of messes up the flow.

What part of Tucson do you live in? I'm on the west side, out towards Marana.

I guess you could say I live in midtown, Campbell and FT. Lowell would be the main crossroads. The weather here in Tucson today and for the next few days will be perfect for taking the Jeep up Redington Pass. I'm sure you have had your Jeep up there. Probably go out there Sunday, and maybe pop off a few rounds, while I'm out there

I am going to have to look into if they sell actual welding rods for a tourch
although I have been welding with coat hangers Since my first job out of high school as a golf course mechanic. I really am out of coat hangers. The only thing I have right now is mechanics wire, but that is to thin. Do they actually sell wire for welding with a torch?

My mother lives in your area. I'll keep an eye out for your ride when I'm in the area. I'm off Silverbell and El Camino del Cerro.

Haven't been to Redington Pass for many years but plan to re-explore the area as soon as the heap is drivable. I spent a good amount of time out there 30 years ago as an alternative to actually dealing with people after leaving the military. :p

Most welding stores, as well as the big boxes and even some hardware stores, carry welding rod for gas welding. Don't ask for "wire" or you'll confuse them. :) There are different size rods, depending on what you are welding. They look like copper rods ...

I as well haven't been out there for at least 20 years doing any serious off-road driving. But I did spend a lot of time out there years ago to get away from it all. I even had my own personal camp spot. Now it's just me and my dog. I certainly don't have any intention of going all the way to cheva falls
(sp). I may go as far as the rock crevasse, don't have the nerve I used to.

You're talking about steel rods for welding, right? Not brass rods for brazing?

Yes steel rods. I didn't know they actually sold them. I have plenty of brazing rods with the white flux. Actually brazing holds pretty well
and what I like about brazing as you can undo it. But I've always used coat hangers for welding, because I didn't know there was any other option

In my recollection, gas welding rods have a copper-colored coating. Brazing rods are bronze or similar material, I think. I may be wrong, as I haven't done any gas welding in years but still have some rods on the gas bottle cart. And, you know, I'm not as smart as I used to think.

Yeah. I had my own personal spot, as well. <lol> I've got some photos of my old '54 Jeep Wagon balanced on two diagonal wheels in the crevasse area. Spent a lot of time by the Falls, too. Have a great time if you go this weekend.

If you like the coat hangers try a clothing store or dept. store they throw away thousands of those things since alot of clothing is shipped on wire hangers and for display/ sales purposes their not needed.

I know a store near me that almost fills their dumpster every week with em.

All the ones I've bought are copper coated. I think it's some sort of coating put on when they're extruded. I've heard of "fancy expensive welding rods" that aren't copper coated, but I've never actually seen one. I've got a big bundle of skinny ones I got when I was gas welding sheet metal. Then I got a MIG welder. Haven't had to gas weld since  .

Thanks, good idea! Actually, there is a dry cleaner, 200 yards from the house. And since my accident, and having to live on Social Security, coat hangers have always worked and the price is much better. Thanks again
I could always get coat hangers from the girl next door, but she unfortunately moved away Last year, I don't know why I didn't think about going directly to the source

Another option for you, maybe: try a construction/concrete supply store and ask for #9 tie wire. I've never welded with gas/rod but this may work for you. They may have other thickness of tie wire as well for your welding pleasure.
