Hi-Lift jack mount 74 CJ5

I'd like to mount my Hi-Lift somewhere nifty. I welded up some brackets to mount it on the hood. I had my heart set on this. The brackets lined up perfectly with the bolts on the hood hinge, and the hood would still open fine. Awsome, right? Then I realized the obvious, no more putting the windshield down. Why even own a Jeep? I have no front bumper, just a winch plate. I hit to many trees to mount the jack to the winch or winch plate without a bumper. So the only place I found to mount it, besides on the fenders - directly behind the back seat, is on the tailgate. High enough so when the tail gate is down, the jack dosn't touch the bumper. But now I have to figure out how to not interfere with the lights or gas fill. Anyone have any tips or ideas regarding ways to mount this thing? because I am sure alot of you have done this before.

 

Many people put clamps on the roll bar and mount the jack across the back of the bar.

 

I dont have a high-lift, but the equivalent that was found in cars in the 70`s

I have it inside the cab, between the passenger seat and the tub. The foot of the jack is near the heater, the ``post`` is obtruding a little bit when the passenger gets in, but other than that, all is ok

I used to carry mine bolted across the rear crossmember. Fit very well, and attaching it is easy. Had to shorten the jack height a little though.

 

tire carrier for me... there is limited room inside as it is and i dont want to have to dig for the hi-lift when i need it.

 

Will the jack mount on the back of the roll bar when there is a soft top on? Someone else reccomended this but I told them I don't want to have to change the configuration everytime the winter comes.

 

I think that would depend on the exact model of the hi lift you have. Mine is short enough that it fits fine across the back. With the jack toward the bottom of the back tubes it doesn't take up a whole lot of room. The clamps that seem to be popular are fence clamps for chain link fence posts. Put the clamp over the bar, bolt on with a long bolt. Slip jack over long bolt and secure with wing nuts. My buddy also did that on a TJ and his jack fits with the hard top on. Mine isn't mounted yet put that is the method I am going to use. I will probably just weld tabs on though as I have some welding left to do on the bar anyway...

 

It fits very well right under the taillights...

Radiator stay rods? Along the length? They are maybe 5/16" plain steel rod on a '74... would that work?

Also, anything heavy should be tied down. Even in a slow roll, that kind of stuff will come loose, and it really hurts. Putting the handle etc. behind the seat is ok if you make a sturdy hod-down for it.

 

I'm currently shopping for mounting ideas on my '70, as well. What do you guys think about doing this idea, except mounting it on the top of the bumper where this guy has his fog lights instead of the front? I've got tow bar mounts along the front, so not really an option for me there. Any operational concerns you can think of?

And I would never mount my jack on the front of the bumper. It would be destroyed in no time.

 

I recently made a swing away tire carrier for my '74 and incorporated the jack mount into it. It seems to be plenty sturdy for the HiLift & 33x10.5x15.
Take a look and let me know what you guys think, It works for me.

 

I have attached a pic of the front mount idea I was thinking of. I see the point about exposing the jack. My only concern about mounting on the rear is that when my girls ride in the back I have to reach over the tailgate to buckle them; their car seats butt up against each fender, so I literally have to contort my hand down into the narrow gap between the seat to click the seatbelt. I don't think I'd be able to do that if I had to reach around a hi-lift.

I really like that custom spare tire carrier on the '74. Looks good.

Thats how I originaly wanted to do it, but I only have a winch plate with no bumper. Although I suppose the tree would hit the tire before the Hi-Lift.
