I was degreasing a model 18 transfer case this weekend, getting it ready to be rebuilt. When I got all the mud and greasee off I noticed this weld. It appears that the case has had a crack in it and been welded.

It is mated to a t14 and all that goes behind the Buick V6. The Jeep is a 1971.

The unit spins freely, but is stuck in the 4wd position. Is it wise to look for another unit or will this situation be ok? I appreaciate any help or suggestions.
    :(

Well, it is easy enough to get a replacement case. You can use a Dana 18 or Dana 20 case. Rebuild it with a new case.

Where do you find replacement cases? I do have a 20 that I won't be using. I would like to use an overdrive. Can this still be done with the 20?

Replacement cases are available by posting a wanted to buy ad in the classifieds. ;)

Dana 20s are not compatible with Warn/Saturn OD units.

As long as your current Spicer 18 has the 1-1/4 intermediate shaft (which the V6 cases do) you can just swap all your Spicer 18 innards and output/shifter housings in/on to the D20 case. It'll bolt right up and the D20 case is much stronger.

The only issue you'll have is if you run a Saturn/Warn, etc. The top of the case doesn't step down in the middle where the overdrive shift linkage goes, so you'll have to slightly modify the linkage rod to work around the D20 case.

I ran this setup for years in my flattie before going to a D300.

You take EVERYTHING off of your Spicer 18 and EVERYTHING off of your D20. Throw everything that came off of the D20 in a box and put it on the shelf.

Take everything from your Spicer 18. Throw the 18 case in the dumpster and reassemble all the stuff from the Spicer 18 into the D20 case. That includes the front and rear output shaft housings, Shifters, PTO cover, output shafts, etc. It all goes into the D20 case the same as if you were rebuilding it with a Spicer 18 case.

When you go to buy an overdrive, I strongly suggest you get in touch with Herm. He is likely to suggest that you go with a rear-shift OD, with the shifter arm that loops up over the TC as mentioned above, since the front-shift model sometimes won't clear the newer cases. Herm is the man, give him a call.

If your gonna look for an OD I know of 2 folks here with good units. Post it in the Wanted Section - I am sure you can get a good one for a good price.
