The only thing a slide hammer puller will do is pull the whole hub/drum/axle/bearing assy out in your lap on the floor. Then you have a nice long greasy heavy pile o parts that are still not apart.BTDT

You can't remove the whole axle/brake assembly without:

    1) removing the drum to access the bolts/nuts holding the backing plate to the axle housing

    or

    2) cutting the heads off of the before mentioned bolts (that hold the backing plate to the axle housing) from the back side

I wasted my 10" swaged drums trying to get them off. If I were you I would buy new bearings, seals, wheel studs, and anything else you might ruin trying to get them off (drums).

this is the one i have. its a matco tools brand. kinda pricey but works like no other. i think otc made the original design and then sold the design to anybody that buys cause i've seen the samething with mac and snap-on on them. this is the only thing that i have found that works without been dangerous, imo.

I noticed the JC Whitney version is a rather course thread, compared to the one (OTC) above. I think fine threads would be worth their weight in gold if the hub is really stuck (like mine was).

Why not, someday when we get all these JEEPS fixed we'll need something to talk about. How far did your hub fly sounds like as good a topic as any. :)

just to rub it in my jeep came with very crappy brakes. and the hubs practicly fell off in my handsR) R) but i wish they had been froze cause im worried they will come loose.mine has the drums that are held on by 3 screws so serviceing the brakes is fairly easy, jared:beer:

That's the one I have, it's a OTC. When a hub is on I mean really on it is the only tool that works, the only one!. I made a homemade rig, it looked like I could pull anything with it, nada, no werk! I then mounted a 5 LB slide hammer, and all I did is destroy more of my hearing (and of course got the normal slide hammer pinch blisters!). I put the OTC puller on and in seconds it was off. Get one you never will regret it, it also worked on my tractor hubs;).

The guys at the 4WD shop showed me how they do it. They have a puller, but just mildly tighten the puller main bolt with an impact wrench - not too much, then remove the impacet wrench, then just take a hammer and tap on the end of that bolt. It goes plink - in your hand. I did this a couple of times, and each time I just had to smile and be amazed how easy it was compared to the attempt with the slide hammer.

I just checked the JC whitney site and it looks like they no longer have the one with the piece included to hit with the hammer. Can anyone confirm that or am I missing something?

Instead of buying one for a one time deal, see if the FLAPS you buy parts from has one you can use. I buy from an O'reillys here in Ada and I just borrowed their puller for my own conversion. No charge.:v6:

If'n you're like MOP and break it that might be more expensive than buying the $50 JC Whitney one?

Could be... Actually I think they just chock it up and order another. The first day I went in to borrow it the guy grabbed the case and opened it up only to find the important parts missing. He mumbled, "I guess someone here is now the owner of a nice puller for free" and ordered up a new one for me to use the following day.R)

Our auto parts stores make you buy it if you break it (actually you pay for it up front and get refunded when you bring it back in operating condition). Plus, they do not offer a sufficiently heavy duty hub puller for this job. I would have certainly broken their hub puller/slide hammer/whatever I threw at it.

I would either take it to a machine shop (pulling axle shaft/hub as a unit) and spend $15 to have it removed or buy the OTC puller if you plan on using it frequently. I personally vote for paying a machine shop. Maybe I just had the worst possible scenario.
