    First

Have you tried the point dist since the rebuild?

If so where did it come from?

    1. No.

    2. MOP's Jeep before he put a HEI in, then the DUI. Never exhibited any of these symptoms before in his Jeep.

This vacuum leak thing has me thinking, I need to investigate my intake where it's ground down for the HEI clearance on the front corner. I think I'll stick some RTV in there and see what comes of it.

I bet if you try the points dist (providing its good) will fix the problem!

Why? I bet not, it started with that distributor...

I think the distributor stuff is a red herring. I don't think it's related. Not after swapping distributors in and out multiple times and it had no effect on it at all.

The biggest change has been since the cam replacement. Just moved higher in the RPM/speed range and is less severe.

Since I don't have a 12V coil laying around it'll have to wait.

I'm still doubtful. The symptom is the same, misses/pops through the carb whenever I reach a certain speed. Does it until I back off to about 45 mph.

Speed has nothing to do with it IMO.

    Grab it off the Commando

It's engine load, I know, I know, I know. My point is, that it's the same symptom. Just at a higher speed which means engine load.

Ever try to wrestle a 12V coil out of the stock location on a V6? There's a reason MOP's is still there even with the DUI. R)

Guess if it is the distributor it's a good reason to buy a Proform HEI. ;)

I'm gonna check vacuum leaks first and then the fuel pump. If that's not it, I'll find a 12V coil and try the points distributor next.

Mount the new coil to the fender. Easier access, and away from the heat of the engine.

Right now it's in the cap. ;) I'm saying I don't want to fiddle with removing one from MOP's CJ-5 or Spoon's Commando to troubleshoot if I need to put the points distributor back in. I'll buy one. Likely my neighbor has one I could borrow though too. Long as I don't catch it on fire and burn it up.

IIRC it had the wrong distributor when you bought it and it ran better, and you drove it home with no problem?

Cut a hole in an old
HEI cap so you can see spark plug wire terminal.
Install cap, with a timing light attached to * that * terminal,
you can see when plug fires in relation to phasing of rotor.

Did this to my V6 and found plug was firing well before
rotor contacted terminal. Removed distributor / coil pickup, and moved
pickup coil away from rotation, filed away a little of coil pickup " basket
    " Trick is to get
impulse just as rotor contacts terminal. Results were impressive, faster
starts, smoother running, more usable power. After correcting phasing, use
Alkyd cap and rotor, not the white, model airplane plastic used on
low cost replacements. I used Blue Streak, but most companies make a heavy
duty line of products. Borg Warner / Accel come to mind. The cost is nil,
    just a little
"quality time " and the satisfaction quotent is great !

Yeah, had an even fire distributor in it. I really need to check the intake where I did some grinding.
