Re: Where's My VIN? (New VIN Project, Please Help Out)

Hey I'd like some help because the info on the document provided says a couple of contradicting things. Not that I disagree, just need some clarifications.
Amazingly, my 1958 CJ5 has the same number on the title, on the firewall in front of the driver and on the framerail on the passenger side above the rear spring hanger. This number is 57548 75021. I don't yet know what the motor or axles say as I haven't had it long enough to clean it up down there but this thing looks like everything is original. Obviously, based on a little research, this 225 wasn't even in use at the time. Interestingly, Kaiser only bought the motor in 1962 so naturally they couldn't have been produced with them. Some say the motor didn't get into the cj5 until 65 but some say there was a plant or two that took a Jeep here and there off the line to the "back" and fitted this little v6 in 'em. As a matter of fact, there is a story that this was done in '58!!! I'm not getting to worked up but the story goes (and I may have even seen it here, I don't recall) that Kaiser engineers saw this successful "conversion" and soon thereafter Kaiser went to buy this motor.
Consider this; don't manufacturers tend to up the ante on things like brakes when they up the ante with horsepower??? My Jeep also has 11" drums. I'm going to be looking really hard to find out the VIN on the motor and axles before I do anything major. Is there any advise or words of wisdom I should know? Please help.

Re: Where's My VIN? (New VIN Project, Please Help Out)

    What kind of contradictions?

There wasn't even a 225 or even a Buick V6 at this time...

Buick only began using the V6 in 1962, I've a brief timeline in the tech section. It was a 198, not a 225 for '62 and 63 in the Buick cars. That's well documented.

Some? Factory literature backs up some of us, it was introduced in '65 as a '66 model year option. ;)

Hayes Bros. and some others have been mentioned, I have a few mentions in the tech section, mainly Hayes brothers. But they were a dealership not a plant. So it wasn't "official".

Impossible, there was no Buick V6 in '58, see above. :)

The V6 and 11" drums are two swaps that were and are both extremely common then and now. What kind of information are you looking for exactly? BTW, Kaiser's 11" drums would be more like the Willys utility vehicles with an integrated hub than the CJ brakes. 11" drums weren't introduced until 1972 on the CJs.

    Sounds like a nice Jeep.

Wow! Thanks for the quick response. You sound like you really know what's up and that's great for me. I'm trying to find out EXACTLY what I have BEFORE I go and do something stupid. As I said, I did not have really any time to inspect it before I loaded it. I had to get some money to him quickly, if I wanted it, and based on the details he was giving me (which somehow seemed different than most scheisters selling on the internet), I wanted it. These findings are once it's mine. I see little thoughts come up after reading a post so I go and look at mine.
Anyhow... ok, so are you saying the 11" drums are NOT factory issue or they are? And the motor was positively installed at a date much later than the Jeep's manufacture? Will it have the VIN of the vehicle it came out of?
Well, as far as the Jeep being "nice", I think it is. Especially considering it's age. It has some bondo (from looking underneath at the body, there are three little rust spots; 1. right rear quarter behind the taillight where the body mount attaches 1" wide by 3" tall, 2. passenger floorboard 2" dia round hole, 3. corner of passenger underseat toolbox 1/2" square) but I believe I can remove that and straighten the metal pretty good. It's been repainted (was originally light blue, now is maroon).
Honestly, I was going to build a really cool trail machine; you know, pretty twisty suspension and small enough to fit into tight places? but one that would still be drivable on a pretty day with an open roof? Thought this would be a good start on a fun project for me and my two sons! Now I may be going relatively stock (if not original) with a mild lift! Any ideas on it's completed value if I restored it completely? Any help is appreciated and you sound like the man to ask.
Oh yeah. The contradictions were regarding the number of the numbers in the VIN and what they meant. I'm sure I misinterpreted them but I just wanted some clarification on my VIN. I got the "Universal" part (57), the "open body" part (54), the "universal" part again (8) but didn't get the last 5 digits. Thought that next "7" of the last 5 digits meant 225 V6 until I saw the "last 6 digits meant sequential". I don't know. Just trying to clarify.

They are not, the Jeep left the factory with 9" drums in 1958.

    Agreed.

No but the engine number if you can find it can be decoded, that will tell you what year it's from.

Wheel it before making any big decisions. Most of us are happy with a mild lift and large(r) tires but not huge tires.

Value if restored completely? Not much, there were a lot of these Jeeps made. The Tux Parks, and Renegade I and II are the Jeeps that have any "real" collector value to them. Just enjoy it for what it is, a fun little machine that can be a great family project.

There's two different types of VIN codes for these Jeeps. The Willys with the 57548 prefix which you have and the later 8405 prefixes from Kaiser Jeep Corp. that contain more information about the engine and whatnot in the last few years.

Yours would just tell you Open Body CJ-5 that was number "blah" off the line. :)

In the document, you will find that for the early CJ5's there were 10, 11, and 13 digit VINs. You stated your VIN is 57548 75021 which is 10 digits. 57 = Universal. 54 = open body CJ5. 8 = Universal. 75021 = Sequential serial number. Built in 1958 (68816 first serial number for 1958, 82877 last serial number for 1958).

    New to the Jeep world.

Bought my grandfathers jeep prior to him starting to lose his mind. Was selling off his toys and didn't realize what he was doing.

    1966 CJ5

    Kaiser with serial of:

    8305 176450

I am assuming that stock this was just a CJ5 4cyl?
Is there any way to find out the original color, engine, etc.?

    Can't find the frame numbers on a '69 CJ5

    Hello Guys,
I bought a second CJ5 last Fall, a '69 with the Dauntless V6. I checked the VIN numbers (8305 C17 355049) on the title and verified they matched the firewall tag before putting down my money.
With the dried mud, etc on the frame I couldn't see the VIN numbers on the frame.
Now, some months later, I have the body off the frame for rust repair and repaint. I have thoroughly cleaned the top of the frame rails on both locations looking for the numbers and I can't see any. There is no evidence they have been altered or ground off, I can see the die marks from the factory forming the frame rail flanges. This frame has the front crossmember from an intermediate CJ added, along with a Saginaw PS box.
My first CJ5 is a '66, with much heavier rust problems, visible pitting on the frame. It has the numbers readable on both frame locations, so I know exactly where to look.
Has anyone ever heard of a frame missing VIN numbers like this? I don't think it is a repro frame, it looks 39 years old.

    Mine's a Tux

Being new to early CJs I finally got around to checking out the numbers on my 66. It is 8322 11957. It has a floor shifter, single transfer case lever, chrome latches and what not. It has vents in the windshield, but no controls for anything related, doesn't even have holes in the dash for any such thing. It has a glove box door, but no box inside. Anything else I should look for?

Some more clarification would be nice here.

What do you mean, what else should you look for? In regards to what?

If you haven't already, I'd suggest reading the Tux Park article I wrote a while back. http://earlycj5.com/tech/general/Tuxedo Park/

Great article, thanks. i was wondering if there were any easy IDs for extra options that might have been available for it. Like bigger clutch, lockers/posi dual intercooled turbochargers?

There's a parts peculiar list in PDF format in the tech section as well. Hopefully I touched on most of the major stuff in the article though.

VIN tag would be enough for me unless I suspected tampering.

I'm lost? Your Tux Vin 8322 11957 and my 66 Tux vin 8322 15272 indicates 3,315 were made in 1966. All researched info shows only 1190 66-Tux's built. Where am I going wrong?

new here, just looking for some answers, please. have a cj-5, licensed as 1970, but vin is 8305 017 359825. tag in engine compartment clearly states a kaiser, but everything i find show 1970s' were amc. looking at selling it, so need to know, so we don't get taken for a ride.

    thanks-

AMC didn't buy Kaiser until 1970. So it's entirely possible. Check your VIN against the document here to be sure it's a '70. You'll be able to find the month it was made that way.

I'd add, it really doesn't make any difference whether it's a Kaiser made or AMC made Early CJ-5. They're the same thing with a different parent company.
