    Refer to post #34.

Not in exact words but pretty much says the same thing. Not saying he was wrong because as I said in my post, this particular Jeep seemed to be a stock CJ5 which offers no more protection than a motor cycle. You just kinda have to go with how you feel the safest. In that case, you are better off being able to bail. My only thinking on it is that I have never read anything much that says vehicles where designed with "the occupants being able to jump out of them" in mind. I have absolutely nothing against not wearing a seatbelt or not having them. I don't wear one when I'm putting around the field or things like that. I just know that if you don't have a cage, lap belts, and shoulder restraints, you can't fully enjoy much serious offroading. But then again, a lot of folks are just trail riders. I too enjoy just a relaxing trail ride and in this case where there isn't much danger from obstacles or other drivers, I sometimes don't wear mine.

Well, I was claiming that seat belts would be of benefit. I suppose my claim would have included Jeeps without a roll bar, though I admit I did not consider that case very thoroughly.

What this boils down to is, that for an open Jeep with no rollover protection, the rollover danger in a collision is a worse hazard than the actual impact of the collision. IF you stay in the car, and IF the car stays on its wheels, I can't imagine ON AVERAGE how it benefits you to leave the protective confines of the car. I also can't imagine ON AVERAGE how you'd rather be restrained by the dashboard or windshield than some comparatively soft and stretchy lapbelts. The main injury that the lap belts addressed, when introduced, was windshield penetration by the occupants, including the gory "collaring" that results from hitting laminated safety glass.

It seems like even the simplest rollover protection, along with seat belts, would be vastly safer than no belts. Maybe no belts is a better option if the Jeep (with no roll bar!) goes upside down... Howard's evidence indicates that.

I think it was my fault. Timgr, glad to see you understand my point. Howard, thanks for the support on my venture, and thanks to all for providing the necessary discussion to get the issues resolved and available for the new Jeeper that comes across this site hoping to get information on whether he/she should:

    1. Leave his/her old CJ stock and not put a belt in to wear,
    2. Put a lap belt in an open CJ,
    3. Put a rear bar and a lap belt in an open CJ,
    4. Put a rear bar tied to the frame and a lap belt in an open CJ,
    5. Put a rear bar and a shoulder/5point in an open CJ,
    6. Put a rear bar tied to the frame and a shoulder/5point in an open CJ,
    7. Put a cage and a lap belt in an open CJ,
    8. Put a cage tied to the frame and a lap belt in an open CJ,
    9. Put a cage and a shoulder/5point belt in an open CJ,
    10. Put a cage tied to the frame and a shoulder/5point belt in an open CJ,

    or

    11. Do 2 through 10 above and choose not to wear the belt(s).

    .....Isn't a seatbelt a shackle of sorts?

My 5 only has lap belts. A buddy of mine wanted to ride with me just after the hurricane came through and knocked Fort Lauderdale flat, since I was going out to get some grub. I still had 31s on it, no lift or anything. I wasn't driving fast because of road debris. He's b#$%ing and moaning about just a lap belt and no doors, so I pulled over, got out, and duct taped him to the seat. He shut up.
