I'm considering getting rid of the keyed switch on SSDutch, and going to a toggle/push button arrangement, with a hidden reed switch that you have to pass a magnet over to activate.

    Thoughts/experiences?

I'm interested in this, too. I've always wondered where you would get a magnetic switch and how one could be installed.

So if you have to keep up with the magnet, whats the diff between that and the keys?
    Any benifit other than novelty?

That being said, I am making my M38 back to the stock switch configuration with a hidden battery switch. Low crime rate where I'm at though...

No keyed ignition switch to mount in the dash. Right now it's going to end up to the left of the wheel which just seems awkward.

alarm switches are easy to get but they wont handle any current
you could use a small relay in the circuit are you talking just the starter
    circuit?

    Yes.

    I want to:

1 - Pass a magnet over a hidden switch while getting in.
2 - Flip an ignition toggle to on.
    3 - Hit a starter button.

If (1) hasn't happened, nothing should work.

I have done something simular. But I kept the key. I kust mounted the ignition switch in the glove box. I normally leave the key in it and the switch turned on. But can remove it if I am parking in a public lot or something simular. Also I can bypass this switch very easily If I were to loose the key but a thief would have to take a bit of time to figure out how it is wired.

On the Dash I have two millitary style toggle switches (red covers) mounted above a push button starter switch. I picked all three up at pepboys.

Now the ignition switch just energizes the two toggles and the starter button. The left hand switch turns on the accessories buss via a relay. The right hand switch turns on the ignition buss again via a relay. The starter button is a momentary type and energizes the starter relay when it is pushed.

The red covers on the switches make it really easy to kill the engine in the event I roll the Jeep over. Flip the covers down and the switches turn off. To turn them on you have to flip the covers up then turn the switch on.

Look at my Post above with the Word Doc in it. It tells you exactly how to do this. Well, how the wiring for the magnet would work.

This sounds really cool. Could you post a Pic of the dash with the switches so we can see what it looks like?

    Thanks,

    Todd.

Hmm...I could spot-weld a piece of angle on the backside of the dash for the current ignition switch. Might be easier - thanks for the idea.

Yep - read the doc too -- thanks!

    locks are for honest people
    keep it simple
unless you lock the hood, a wire from battery to coil and pocket screwdriver to jump solenoid terminals and it's still gone......
maybe mount the coil under that dash......

edit: oops, probably has HEI on the 4.3 ?

    Yea...HEI.

Not looking for a theft deterrent so much as just a way of losing the keyed switch on the dash. Around here putting the t-case in neutral would probably confuse most folks anyway.

reminds me of a customer that had about 20 toggles mounted on his dash; only 4 or 5 had to be thrown to start the Jeep and keep it running; looked terrible, but he didn't want keys....

How about the low $$ approach?

A toggle switch in an obscure but convenient spot.

But leave the keyed ignition in place.

If one could get an on-off-momentary contact Switch it would be great, but if not he would have to perhaps go with two switches next to each other.

With the keyed lock in place no one would suspect that there was a 'back door' into the ignition.

My system is dirt simple to bypass. The challenge is that the wiring is all custom and a potential thief would have to take some precious time to figure out what I had done.

For me it would take be 10 seconds to hotwire and drive off.

I looked and I do not have pics of the switchs so I will have to take some tonight.

Again, getting rid of the keyed ignition is entirely the point.

Can you say twin-stick? I knew you could. One axle in high, the other in low range. The Jeep aint going anywhere and unless the thief knows exactly what is going on they will give it up quick.

I can't do that with a normal D18 twin stick.
