The next time you see your customer, make fist, and thump him right on the top of his head. . . . "brain duster" is what I think this practice is called, lol.

Well, I try to advise him but ultimately its his jeep.
Right now I am trying to find a location for the hi-lift jack.
Tried it on the swing out spare tire but it either blocks the tail lights or when mounted as in this picture limits the swing.

I really like the work you have done on this CJ. Too bad you could;t get your customer to drop the fugly bumper and ditch the trailer tail lights. I guess I am a bit old school' and think that simpler is better.

Paint and body work looks really good. I am into a similar project with my CJ2A… but my Jeep is being built for original purposes as a "light recon vehicle'. I hate the complexity and look of a roll bar/cage, but realize they are essential safety equipment.

    Very nice work, indeed.

    Thanks.

Thought I would post some pics of the work modifying the old spare tire assembly and making it so it will swing out of the way.
The pivot is made by A-Z fabrications and has a 1 1/4" steel rod machined at one end for bearings and seal with the other end that is welded into the bumper. The DOM steel sleeve is also machined for bearing races and a dust cap.
I am using the original bolt holes that were in the bumper for the old setup and had to enlarge the one side considerably to accommodate the 1 1/4" pivot pin.

Set up for 3/4" of spacing between top of bumper and bottom of spare tire holder.

Fabricated some support for the latch side so that when closed the pivot bearing will not have to bear the weight continuously. The sleeve will also guide the eye bolt to a threaded nut welded to the bottom of the bumper.

Mounted the tire to see if and how the hi-lift jack could be made to fit.

    Problems with this location are:
    (1) if I go any higher with the jack it blocks the tail lights:
    (2) the floor plate of the jack limits the swing out travel and prevents the tailgate from being easily accessible:

Going to have to find another place for this monstrosity of a jack.

Just a thought....For similar reasons of clearance and space with my hi-lift mount - I take the floor/base plate off when mounted on bumper. I use a square linchpin to attach the plate (in place of the cotter pin) so its easy and quick to take-off and put on when needed. I keep the base plate in the tool box with chain and some other basic stuff.

Looks good. I've got one of those Century 250 welders as well. NOTHING came close to the duty cycle for the price. Been real happy with mine which I've had about 12 years.

I had considered taking the base plate off and your idea of the linchpin makes sense. I will think some more on it.

I have had mine about 12 years as well and bought it for the reason you sited. Only thing I have had to replace is the cooling fan and that was about a month ago. Cost just under $100 and about an hour of my time. It has served me very well and does everything I need it too.

I've also mounted the jack vertical between the tire and body on some of the ones I built. You can also put it up at the top of the tire area, do that when we add boxes above the tire for tools and such.

Got the bucket seats installed today.
They were supposed to be "direct fit" but the passenger seat frame didn't even sit on the mounting rails. You can see by the last picture how I got around that problem.

That's what I'm talking about...Personally I like stock looking seats! I had to do something similar mounting '75 seats in my '72.

After much back and forth I decided to follow someone's suggestion about removing the base plate on the jack.
I ended up having to relocate one of the mounting bolts for the jack and making some spacers from steel pipe to hold the jack in the right place.

Now for touch up and general cleaning and saying good-bye.

Here's a close up of the windshield hood catch. I couldn't find one when I needed it so thought I would post one for others.

    Nice job.

I'll admit, I personally like the vinyl steering wheel wrap. You didn't save it by chance? I can't find one that will fit the large stock wheel.

Actually, I do still have it. I'll take a closer look at it to see what kind of shape it is in.

There are no vehicle inspections here in Northern Arizona, so as long as he can see behind him, has proper lights, insurance, plates, etc. he is good to go.
