Hey , Coronet...........nothing in the Jeep World is perfect..........there will always be some deficiency's no matter what it looks like on the surface............If your trying to turn a profit on this perhaps you should save your money and find another investment.

Offer the guy $2000.............what can he say?

I think you've answered the question for yourself :) The CJ looks okay for $3k, but if its not what you want then its not worth anything to you and I would advise against trying to rebuild and flip an old CJ for profit. I don't think many of us will ever get back the money invested into them. I love the J trucks too - wife won't allow more than one Jeep and I already have a good truck for my DD. good luck

I own two J-trucks (being too sentimental to get rid of one or the other) ...

The J-trucks don't have much value on the used car market. Most people consider them oddball trucks, and they have been out of production since 1988, when Chrysler took over and determined that the J-trucks conflicted with their Dodge truck line. They were never a big seller for Jeep.

I would definitely take the standard over the automatic. 1973-79 were the Quadratrac years... the Quadratrac was revolutionary in its day, but they wear out chains (driving the front and rear axles through the chain) and there is no source of quality replacement chains at this time. Read Jubilee Jeep's page http://www.jubileejeeps.org/quadratrac/ (Flint and Krista) about the Quadratrac and check into the FSJ (full size Jeep) forums about the chain situations. I think most owners that drive more than a few miles a year are looking into substitutes for their Quadratrac (nothing is bolt-in compatible).

Have you thought about a J10? The J20s are more scarce and have a higher GVWR, but otherwise they are the same truck. The J10 also came with an 8' or 7' bed and the scarce and desirable Thriftside/Sportside bed, if that appeals to you. They all have bed seam rust issues. A 1980 or newer J10 can be found with the T176 four speed and a 258 inline 6 pretty commonly. The T176 is a repop of the Ford Top Loader passenger car transmission, made buy Tremac on license. It's an easy shifter, though they tend to wear out their aluminum shift tops and jam. Replacement tops are available aftermarket. It is very easy to replace the factory 4.2L/258 with the much more modern AMC/Chrysler 4.0L with its excellent Mopar factory MPI. The 4.0L can be built with a 258 crank to make a 4.6L/4.7L stroker engine - there is a forum just for the stroker engines http://www.jeepstrokers.com/forum/

A J20 will be a long bed and AMC 360. Not much else out there. The automatic was the GM TH400 before 1980 and the Chryco TF727 from 1980 on. Both are strong but very inefficient in modern terms. A J20 is going to be a pig on fuel, which might dampen your enthusiasm for driving it much... A J20 will also be more suitable to pull your car trailer, if you are thinking about that.

Oh, and I paid $2500 for my J20, from Arizona, and MA charged me tax on $1200 or something. Kinda shows you what the flip potential is compared to the CJs. Although $16K for a 90-100 point original 1967 CJ seems ridiculously high. Very few of the marque get near that price, if any.

Thanks for the information it is a very great help.
I would prefer a short bed truck for my planned use as a hunting vehicle so maybe the J10 would be the better choice.
    Decisions, decisions.

Do you have a source for soft tops? The cj5 needs a complete set up and most that I am seeing are $900 plus.

AFAIK Bestop is all there is. They make two models, the cheaper "Tiger Top" and the "Super Top." Both are ca $800-900 retail.

IIRC Nate ("Garage Gnome") had new fabric made for his 2A. Don't know what it cost.

If the current top is ok, you could try to source the pieces that are missing. If they are just rods, you could likely fab them. IIRC the door rods are either plain rods, or rods with a washer welded perpendicular to make a socket. Not complicated. An upholstery shop that does boat covers is supposedly the right place to take your issues with the fabric, ie tears and cuts, windows, or zippers.

    Okay I'm back.
The owner wants it painted and fixed up.
Started dismantling and here is where I'm at:
    Started dismantling the Jeep:
First thing was the spare tire assembly.

May look good in the pictures but it was mounted poorly. The spare tire assembly wouldn't swing out of the way and made the tailgate useless and the rear of the jeep inaccessible.
Notice how it was bolted through the tailgate:

    The tailgate will need welding:

The compartment under the passenger seat had a rubber mat but when I removed it:

Removed the side plates and the metal under looked pretty good:

Removed a wooden box enclosure that someone made:

    Removed the roll bar:

The front and rear bumpers are also off but I didn't take pictures of that.

So what are the plans for it? Does the gentleman want you to restore it to original? Or keep it lifted and modify for off-road? Do you know if that is the original color of the jeep?

This Jeep doesn't look very safe, if I consider the time spent on mine, I will charge my time as it comes, because days are short when you work on such a nice car.

Basically he wants it gone through mechanically, wiring issues fixed, exterior and interior painted, reinstall the bumpers and roll bar (painted black) and recover the seats. I am sure the suspension will stay as it is since he likes the look.

I have been looking at 1967 Jeep paint chips and cannot find anything that matches this color. Seems they only offered Empire Blue Metallic and the chip looks much darker. The color on the Jeep now is a solid powder blue but the only chip that seems close is Sierra Blue from 1964.

Were there other colors offered in 67 that I am not finding?

If you were looking for the original color, what color is inside the tool box under the passenger seat or in nooks and crannies on yhe firewall?
    Otherwise, Predidential Red will do.

    Thanks Donny,
The tool box area was totally rusted, the trim code tag under the battery box gone, and there was some powder blue over spray on the VIN tag. I couldn't find any evidence of another color present.
Owner said he wasn't crazy about the blue and wants the red so it doesn't matter anymore.

Good choice. That's an iconic color for these Jeeps. It will look good and be easy to sell.

Originally the windshield frame, bumper and roll bar were satin black. Frame was flat black. Not sure the windshield was satin intentionally, but the gloss was not nearly as shiny then as it is now. Roll bars were aftermarket equipment, and installed at the dealership. The tube bumpers are modern ... period bumpers were a piece of channel on the front and nothing or the drawbar on the rear, or chrome bumpers. There was a push bumper and a step bumper available too.

Thanks for the info. I hadn't thought about the windshield being black. I will check out some pics and run it by the owner.

I need some pictures of an original engine compartment. Coil location, wire routing, stuff like that.

I decided to remove the body from the frame so as to get access to the drive train and suspension.
Found more ripped metal on the radiator support:

    Lots of grease and gook:

After a couple of hours of scraping and scrubbing I am starting to make a dent:

    Frame had been patched:

Will post some more pictures when I get it clean.
