Oregon, that is an older pic, I recently had to replace that motor due to some spun rod bearings. It's more or less the same, some changes to some wire routing here and there, installed the factory heater and hoses (which clutters things up a bit), and swapped valve covers side to side to put the oil fill on the pass side so as not to interfere with the heater. I haven't moved into my house yet so no computer and no way to post pics. It is on my avatar though.
My previous motor was a 84 231 and the new one is a 85 231 from a grand national, minus the turbo of course. Sooooo, the MSD is the standard one, actually it is one step up I think as it has a built in hookup for a rev limiter, which I added when I put the new motor in, maybe it will save this motor some day, unlike the old one which gave up under some high revs while four wheeling. Can't remember the model number but let me know if you want I can go look later.
I added it because I got it cheap off ebay. It is one of those things where I can't say I noticed a huge difference, as I was already running the HEI anyway. It does away with the HEI module inside the dist, but I carry it along in case the MSD ever quits. Like I said, got it used, and have been running it over 4 years now. When I installed it, my initial reaction was it smoothed out my idle, as far as power there was no big seat of the pants difference. Not sure if I would spend the money again or not. I do believe in getting the best wires you can afford, I have MSDs on this motor, and have used Jacobs on my 454 in my Blazer. Both are money well spent. HEI is a big improvement by itself, the larger cap (compared to older points dist) allows more space between the contacts (between cylinder to cylinder inside I mean) to prevent voltage leak from one cylinder to another.

Enough rambling about that, I have done a lot of research on ignition and like to talk about it.

If you are working on your engine compartment, here is a suggestion. I got a bunch (100 or so) of adel clamps off ebay for about 30 bucks. They are aluminum (never rust) and rubber cushioned. I think they are primarily for aircraft use. I got a bag full of different sizes. Very handy for tidying up the engine compartment wiring, hoses, fuel line and such. Umpco is another brand, same thing. They come in plain steel (RUST), stainless and aluminum, in different sizes, and with different size mounting holes, so pay attention while shopping. You can see them on the driver fender well of the posted pic.
