Because this is the song of the day.

A broken bleeder valve is turning into an axle swap....

I went and bought the speed bleeders. In stock here local - cool.

Put 3 of them on...went for the 4th and saw that the bleeder was broken off. Crap.

    Jack up Jeep.

Remove wheel. One lug comes off hard..hmmm...great. Stripped stud. Crap.

Remove center cap and axle nut.

Oh yea - these old 9" drums were fun...try my biggest puller. Bend the center screw and "redesign" the pointed end before it just snaps off. Crap.

All the while I'm practically sitting on the rear axle from Dutch. I'm thinking at this point swapping that in would take less time and be less hassle than dealing with getting the drum off, replacing the stud, and replacing the wheel cylinder.

This has to set a record for scope creep!

Only if I reuse the U-bolts...which isn't the worst thing I guess.

Got Sasquatch coming over later...he doesn't know what he's in for!

Good luck Mike! That swap shouldn't be bad at all. The gears match?

    No.

    5.38's in it.

    4.27's from Dutch.

Not that the front would take all that long either.

'Course, I got my Rancho springs sitting there too and had planned to do them at the same time, but wanted to pull them apart and clean them up first.

    Crap.

Even so, you're not going 4 wheeling today, right? Get the rears in, take your time on the front axle. Shouldn't be a big deal...Nice weekend project if you're flying solo ;)

No, but next Saturday is that SpeedFixx Jeep show/cruise event where they'll have an obstacle course of some sort. Was looking forward to playing on that and getting a feel for this all-new-to-me Jeep. Won't find a closer shakedown location.

But one thing at a time I guess.

You have a set of screw extractors? I'd try that on the broken bleeder, either that or commit to the axle swap and go to it. Depends on the time available.

If you get the bleeder out, get a new nut and clean up the lug stud and put it back together. 4 lugs will hold the wheel fine for the nonce. I wouldn't put much effort into those 5.38 axles.

    Just a friendly suggestion.

Hey do ya have a spare drum? Try cutting the old one off with a cutting disc. Have you tried lots of heat on the area where the drum and axle meet.Oh I can't remember, is your drums held on by little screws? Shot in the dark?Beat the heck out of where the two join with the rounf end of the ballpeen hammer. Soal the s--t out tof the two where they join. Hope something helps. Just some things that have worked for me. Later Jim

I didn't do much past trying the puller on the drum - doesn't make sense to me to spend that much effort/time when I want to swap the axles anyway.

    Anyhoo...rear axle is out.

Only holdup is going to be u-bolts. I spent a bit of time trying to get the bolts off with heat and leverage but they were still going to break off so just cut them. Nowhere to get new ones yet today, so will get as far as possible w/o them and order some on Monday.

I would swap both axles in now, and do the springs later so you can still clean them up and get a new set of U bolts in there at that point.

sounds like double work, but you're the one who wanted to bleed your brakes today!

Hmmm - I dunno. I might be able to take you there...

I'd do both axles while the beef is there ;)

New axle in...buttoning it up as much as I can. Then onto the front.

Definitely have a Jeep lean going on....11" drums fit through one side, other side I had to put a bottle jack between the spring and frame.
