Chris be sure to carefully inspect the cable the full leght of it for bends or burrs. Be sure to waer heavy leather gloves while you do this.

As to the question of buying it.

If what you really want is the M8000 which would as you say fit your jeep better. Then this one has to be a good enough deal to override that including the extra time and effort to fit this one to your Jeep.

Sometimes a good deal is a good deal but if it isn't what you want then it's just a tempation.

well the deal is in denver which is about an hour from me depending on traffic. there was another guy coming to check it out so i didn't want to chance driving all the way down there for nothing. well, of course he still has it but today was my best chance for getting down there.

if i can get it i probably will, but no big loss if i don't. i would like a new or newer winch anyway.

Check out my photosite. I have a 68 which I'm guessing is identical to yours on the front end. I have a warn rock crawler bumper and have the winch on brackets. Paid 300 for mine with the mount plate but I don't have the freespool as mine is a 8072. For $400 what the heck you waiting for? :?

Dude I would be all over that winch. Even if it needs a cable or some parts. Get the mounting bracket since unlike most winches it bolt to the front of the plate. I don't think there is a winch made that is an equal. you could get Warns new version but i think that is over $1200 bucks. Yeah low profile is cool but your not going to find something with as fast of a line speed as that for $400 bucks. If you decide you don't like it you can EASILY get the $400 back. I passed one of these up in the past cause it had a bad solinoid. what a dumb mistake that was.

Have you considered the Tabor or Magnum 9000? I believe these are made by Warn, they have a low profile and are priced around $500.

    i didn't pull the trigger yet :p

just pricing right now, looking to buy soon though.

not really... i have seen a few pics and they look a little cheap but i have not looked at them real close yet. i like the high resale value of the warn brand if i decide to get something else later. plus you just can't beat how tough they are.

I'll go with McRuff on this. I've always been surrounded with other Jeeps or other winches or make sure that I am :D

Get the winch. If you don't you'll regret passing it up at that price. If you never put it on your jeep it sellable or good trade material. I you get it and put it on and only use it once in 2 years, it'll seem like it's worth it. They're kinda like four wheel drive you may not have known you needed it until you got it. ;) Small price to pay for the feeling of security it provides.

thanks for the info. i like the sunk mount idea... looks pretty good but still crowded + there is no way i could fab up that mount (yet).

does anyone know why the x8000i is discontinued? are they going to replace it with something? i am pretty sure i am going to try and get one before they are all gone. i am going to pass on the 8274 even though i know it is i great winch... just for a larger vehicle then my cj.

now as for needing a winch... my schedule does not allow for me to wheel with my friends very often so i have to be pretty carefull on the trail. this is just one added safety measure to make sure i am not walking 10 miles or more to the nearest highway. when there is snow it is just a matter of time before you get stuck no matter what... just a couple months ago i was on an easy trail, but got in a little deep going down hill and there was no backing up or turning around so i had to keep going. took about 5 tries to get back up the hill. i would have felt much better if i had the winch on the jeep as a backup. (chains will be purchased this fall as well).

That used winch is the same one I have. This is the best, most reliable electric winch ever made hands down. Read up on it, you wont find a better winch. Thats why it has been made for so long. Alot of cable there too. Dont pass it up without having all the infornmation together. I have mine on a receiver type mount and I use it on my truck as well as my jeep. I can pull forward or backwards.
