I'm going to replace the rear main seal and have the flywheel resurfaced next week. Just a parts update. This is from Krage.

    Hi Marc,
    >
    > We don't have the rear main seal available for your engine, you may have some luck at a local NAPA or other large chain auto parts store.
    > We are not familiar with the "LUK" clutch kit you ask about, the only clutch discs and kits we sell can be found with prices in this link to our website:

Here's the NAPA PN for the rear main seal off the 225:
    rope: #SGARS742R
    rubber: #SGARS742

Now do I buy rope or rubber?

Took Krage forever for them to get my clutch in. Almost didn't get it before tellico. Had to pay up the wazzoo for next day shipping so I could get it on time. Would have been cheaper to get it locally and pay a little extra. Just my .02 on the clutch kits. ;)

I just started having chatter in reverse after my silver lake trip. Actually started at silver lake. Now its going in first also. went to take the crossmember off so I can drill it out for the stabalizer stud, and found the drivers side bolts(into the frame) had worked themself loose and had about a 1/4 inch gap. Guess that was the whole problem for me. Guess I'll be going out to buy some locking washers or nylon nuts for the bolts I bought when I redid everything before tellico.

    One other question...
How does that stabalizer stud go on the transfercase? there are 2 rubber bushings. Does one go between the transfercase and crossmember, then the other ontop of the trans, then washer, bolt?

I have a '71 cj and I have chatter problems. I know I have a leaking rear seal that I'll be addressing as soon as the parts arrive.
I was looking under the cross member tonight and discovered some interesting things. My '68 has a cable with a ball on one end and a threaded bolt on the other end. The ball fits into a steel fork welded to the cross member and the other end goes to a steel bracket ( 1/4" thick ) that attaches to one of the bellhousing bolts. The '71 dosen't have this cable and the cross member doesn't have the steel fork welded to it that holds the ball end. There isn't any evidence of there ever being one there.
Also I discover the transmission isn't bolted down to the motor mount! The motor mount is bolted to the cross member but there are no bolts from the mount to the trans!
    I'll take some pictures tomorrow.
Does anyone have a parts manual blowup of the trans-mount-cross member area? I don't think I have the right trans mount.

Well, I just pulled my bell housing and I think I'm gonna rule out oil soaked as the issue. Dry as a bone. Lots of dust though. I think I need a cover for the clutch fork. Anyhow, I thought with the amount of oil on the front of the inspection plate that my rear main seal was toast, but after pulling stuff aprt I'm not so sure. The flywheel is bone dry on both sides, as is the inside of the inspection plate. I think it's just my oil pan gasket, as it doesn't seem to be coming up from anywhere higher. I did have a leak on the fron of the tranny but saw no evidence of that oil getting even past the adapter between the trans and bell. So, a couple of questions -

If my RMS was leaking would I see evidence inside the flywheel inspection plate?

Could a lot of dust cause the chatter?

The transfer case snubber is a big hunk of rubber hard bolted to the crossmember in one spot and bolted with a sleeve to another spot on the crossmember. It's in the blurry picture attached. Should I use something stiffer?

I've ordered a new tranny mount and plan on picking up motor mounts as well. Hope that does it. Any other insights appreciated.

Well glad to hear it's not the cluth or the rms... just sorry you had to tear it all apart to confirm.
The hard rubber snubber should be OK. Hopefully new tranny mount and MMs should cure the chatter for you. Keep us posted Bob!! :)

    Update:

Cleaned the pressure plate, flywheel and clutch with laquer thinner. It did appear there was some sort of contamination on there. I think it might have been from the grease I put on the shaft splines to try and make assembly easier. Sealed the leak on the front of the T14. New trans mount. Stiffened the x-fer mount a bit. Got a clutch fork boot.

After about 5 miles - smooth as silk - even in reverse :D :D

We'll see if it lasts - camping this weekend, so I'll get some opportunities to test it. :D
