At Tellico in May I developed a nasty chatter in reverse. It had never done it before and kinda just started happening. So when I got home I replaced the motor mounts thinking it was them. They were pretty separated so new ones went in. I still had the chatter after that but not as violent.

Next I fabbed up a turnbuckle from the lower drivers side transmission mount bolt to the crossmember. I tightened it up and once again it helped but did not eliminate it all together.

So now I'm at a loss as to why I still have chatter. The T-14 mount is less than a year old and is tight. The side torque mount (F4 motor mount style) is also nice and tight. Would it hurt to add a stabilizer stud to the other side of the transmission mount? I'm thinking a large bolt with rubber bushings.

Got it too Joe. Mine starts after driving for a while. When I first start up and go no chatter. I'm wondering if it's oil on the clutch plate - either the front of my T-14 or the rear of my :v6: one or the other (or more likely both) are leaking. My plan was to fix that and go from there. Love to hear any other opinions on what it might be.

Got it too. Going to replace my motor mounts this weekend. Starting happen in first. It doesn't happen until the Jeep warms up though. Backing out of the garage first thing in the morning and no chatter but after 30 minutes - chatter, chatter, chatter. Does NAPA sell V6 motor mounts for our Jeeps?

I'm going by NAPA after work and see what I come up with. If not then I guess I call Krage and see what they've got. Shouldn't take too long to pop in and out. HA! There's 4 hours spent this Sunday. Maybe I can get it done before the Dave Mathews concert.

Does your jeep have the torque mount on the transfer case? I know that mine does and it was loose. I believe that and a flywheel that needs resurfacing caused a lot of my reverse chatter.

I had it too.. really bad.. and I changed motor mounts.. that wasn't it.. my transfer case snubber thingy was the culprit so I made a new one using an F-4 (hurricane, not phantom) motor mount and that cured it...

I've got it too! Just as you discribe it. Never thought to check the trans or motor mounts. Guess I'll be on my back this weekend. I assume to check the mounts one would use a jack to see if the engine-trans will lift?

I had it bad....new clutch and pressure plate and a resurfaced flywheel fixed mine completely without any stabilizers of any kind. I already had new motor mounts and tranny mounts and a t-case mount.

Yeah, I'd suspect the clutch plate is either glazed or oil-soaked. The V6 motor mounts are soft, so they probably allow a lot of movement. Replacement clutch plate isn't expensive - the labor, however...

Yeah I may be leaning towards an oil-soaked clutch. My clutch isn't as smooth as it was a month ago. Anybody have P/N for the clutch and associated parts? Do we have a parts lists established here? I need to check that first...

I have it too. REALLY bad.

I've also checked the motor mounts, tranny mount, and t-case mount. All seem to be fine. I plan on installing a new clutch assembly, and having the flywheel resurfaced like John mentioned.

I just replaced the clutch and resurfaced the fly wheel. Sounds like it's time to fix the oil leaks for me.

I replaced the clutch and all related parts back in 2002. I resurfaced the flywheel then as well. The last time I pulled the transmission (last summer) everything looked fine.

If the chatter is due to an oil soaked or glazed clutch then why does it not chatter in the forward gears?

I couldn't figure that one out either Joe, but Mine was the same way. Only chattered in reverse.

I think my brother explained it to me...maybe I'll ask him.

I'd guess it's becasue the torque due to the driveshaft is reversed when you're going backwards. Think about a giant hand holding on to the driveshaft. In forward gears, the engine wants to turn over in its mounts in a clockwise direction. In reverse, it wants to turn over counter clockwise. My thoery - it's the linkage. In reverse, when the engine moves, the linkage pulls the clutch off. The clutch comes off, less force on the mounts, the clutch engages again. A negative feedback with too much gain. In the forward gears, it's positive feedback. Straining on the mounts moves the linkage in the opposite direction, making the clutch engage more rather than less.

Mine does it worse in reverse. When it was just reverse I could live with it, but now it does it in 1st gear also. Might just be building up to do it in 1st Joe.

I just got out from under the jeep. I've got oil coming out of the clutch housing pan and streaming back over the trans. My motor mounts look ok so I suspect I have a bad rear main seal and the trans and clutch has got to come out because the chatter is driving me nuts.
