Commando Springs On A Cj?

I've been thinking about softer riding springs for my CJ. My Commando rides like a Caddy compared to the CJ. I know this is an apples/oranges comparison, as the Commando has 50 year old stock springs + a longer wheelbase, but I feel like the spring configuration would be a big benefit too. The front JC springs are 2" wide, and the center pin is offset- the distance from the axle to the front is the same as a CJ, but the distance to the rear is about 5" longer. The rears are also offset, by a bunch. The distance from the axle to the front of the spring is about 21" but to the rear is 31.5". I think I could turn these around and make them work on a CJ.
Obviously I'd have to replace all 8 spring hangars but it seems like using these springs with the offset would avoid a lot of the fab work involved with a YJ spring swap...kinda like the old Holbrook springs.
Has anyone ever put Commando springs on a CJ? Problems? Thoughts?

Thats a possibility too, that would save a lot of work changing the spring hangars at the shackle end. I could always get a custom set from Alcan, I don't think Rocky Mountain Spring is building springs.

 

Sounds like you’re trying to reinvent the wheel when YJ springs have solved a lot of those issues.

I’m a huge non-fan of Holbrook-style springs. The longer spring section in the middle of the vehicle makes zero sense from a spring geometry standpoint. It would wreak havoc on driveline angles and roll center. How many production vehicles have you seen with that setup?

I’d look into a YJ swap before going that route.

 

If you're talking about the leaf springs with the offset center pin, that's literally how the Commando is set up, see my original post.
As for YJ springs, I simply don't have the fab skills for the frame mods required to do it. I was interested in the Rocky Road kit, but have read about the problems with it so I won't be going that route.

 

Yeah, the long section is behind the axle. Spinning it around changes everything.

 

So, having both of the long sections towards the center of the vehicle will give adverse handling?

 

It's common for flatfender guys to run the longer rear springs up front. I've been told by several passengers that my Jeep rides fairly good.
Personally I'd try messing with mixing and matching spring packs before getting too deep in mods. Oh and reverse your shackles ( ducks)

 

If I had the skills to do that, I could probably figure out a YJ swap too.

 

You just said you have been around old jeeps your whole life. You can do the work no problem. I am very novice and handling the YJ spring shackle reversal with not many issues. It’s a lot of work but it’s a long winter.

I have most of that kit just taken off mine. And a Herm steering mount. I guess I’ll put up a “For Sale” post…or save it for the scrap man.

If I felt the necessity of putting YJ springs on, I would do my own version with off the shelf or hand built parts. This would
give you better control over the finished product.
