Looks like I need a set of new plugs for my 74 AMC 304. TSM says "Champion N12Y'' is the specified sparkplug.
However I have never had good luck with Champion plugs. What brand do you-all recommend as being a good quality For replacement of the Champion?

I am also overwhelmed when I look at cross referance charts. There are literally dozens of brands and model number plugs they claim that are a compatible replacement, how can there be that many model plugs that are all alike? Prices range from 1.99 to 19.99 per plug.

I went with NGK 97382 Iridium. More money but I think a better plug with my HEI.

Yup, NGK. I wouldn't say no to an AC Delco or Motorcraft (most of the time they're NGK's in the first place)

Thanks guys, looks like NGK has the most votes. Most of the top name brands are likely good plugs. I did notice that about every other oil change I would be hunting an occasional miss fire I could often not find when using the champion plugs in my 304. I usually just replaced the full set to clear things up. On the other hand I owned an older Ford PU with a 292 V-8 with champion plugs in it that came with the truck and they were still in it when I sold it 5 years later.

Ah, Thankyou for that link. I did not know how they worked or why we need resistor plugs but I had suspected they might not deliver the electric current or spark quite as efficiently as non resistor plugs. I have no radio or computers on my jeep so best to go with then non resistors. Thanks Jim

I'll have to look into NGK.
I went to verify my plug number, I'm using RN14YC
I think Champion and Fram are Loved equally, ..... but I've been using both for 45 yrs. :p

Just yesterday, I was thinking how my Harley has never had a lick of trouble with its plugs in thirty-plus years.

I am thinking that the old plugs were much better quality than this new stuff coming out of china. Try a new plug and see how long it last, but don't throw your old one away yet. I keep everything now days even my old points and certainly my old condensers and plug wires.

Not relevant to the discussion, just a bit of automotive trivia: AC is the initials of the brand's founder, Alfred Champion!
