Yes, very good idea! after cleaning all the old grease off, inspection of them will be much easier. On reassembly pack well with a good quality wheel bearing grease and lube the seal lips a little also.

If they look good, run 'em. They are probably better quality than any replacements you can buy now of days.

I am putting the rear diff back together. I did not pull the diff carrier, but I pulled the pinion seal and the seal at the end of the housing. I replaced the pinion seal and reassembled the yoke. I replaced the driver side seal at the housing, greased the driver side bearing (still on the axle), and inserted the driver axle with the bearing, inserted the bearing cup, and impacted it flush with the housing. Everything good.
I repeated the same process on the passenger side and the bearing did not sit flush with the housing. The axle shaft felt like it was all the way seated into the differential. I then inserted and impacted the passenger side bearing cup, but the bearing and cup are still about 1/16” proud. In hindsight, it was probably a mistake to drive in the cup. I think I need to get the bearing and cup flush, and I think I need to pull the cup and axle/bearing in order to tell where the problem is.

Any ideas what is most likely keeping the axle/bearing/cup from seating all the way?
