"but there appears to be no moving parts"

The PCV valve should rattle when you shake it, if it doesn't you should replace it.

    Maybe it's a combination of both. :)

ordered a new pcv valve, but it hasn't arrived yet.

Meanwhile I tried to start the motor tonight (out of the vehicle), to make sure the new distributor and fuel pump were working, and I noticed that the starter gear doesn't retract after I hit the starter. I haven't tried to start it anymore, as I'm not sure if this is right?

I did make sure that there is wiggle room between the starter gear and the flywheel, and there is, it doesn't seem wedged into the teeth. (I secured the starter to the mounting plate and have the plate bolted to the block tightly)

Anything I might be doing wrong that is causing the gear not to pop back in? As far as I know it was working correctly before I removed the engine, I drove the jeep around twice a day for about a week before I started tearing things apart.

It's been "converted" to 12v, but just barely. Starter looks original, or at least original style.

[IMG]I put a fuel pump with the glass bowel on it, you can take the top off and rotate it 180* and made a gas line to the carb out of brake line the gas goes in the back and out the front making it easier to plum up. Good luck.

started the motor and let it idle for a few seconds. The starter gear retracted, not sure why it was staying popped out earlier.

Happens sometimes as they get some wear. Occasionally they let loose on the next start, now & then it takes a good hammer whack, sometimes you have to drop the starter & fiddle with it a bit.
