Ya I’d like to keep this going. If the mods wouldn’t mind moving it to the appropriate section for a longer turn project.

 

I absolutely agree. The shell wasn’t remotely close to fitting. Now I’m trying to figure out where to store it. It’s feather light and although already dented up I couldn’t live with it getting destroyed.

 

I’d be interested if there’s any significance to this as well.



i found it much too late it turns it my stepdad’s stepdad who originally owned this was also a navy Seabee. Going through the binder there are a few notes he’d wrote to different manufacturers back in the day including Perkins referencing his jeep club and the potential for magazine articles.

 

And by the way I couldn’t stand the suspense any longer what was going on with the fiber poking from the lower passenger front door.

 

One more note. I’m not sure I’ll be able to drive it even if it runs. Holly crap it will be cramped. And I’m a short legged 6’2”. I may need Nickmil to move this thing around for me

 

I didn’t get much else done. Instead of diving into the fuel system the engine cover kind of snow balled on me. I intended to only remove it to gain some space to work but that became removing all the insulation, blankets and peg board screwed to the inside and outside. The barn stinks so bad from the debris but ran out of time for a dump run today. I think some dynomat type stuff will be a much cleaner solution.

 

I even see a big paper wasp nest in there.
As far as sound deadening, there is a marine product that is very effective for engine bays. Its about 3/4” thick foam/rubber/reflective that has a lead layer in there. Its’ also self-stick. It makes an effective sound/heat insulation without being too thick. I’ve seen the same material up to 2” thick.

Look for “Soundown lead acoustic barrier” They make both a foam and a fiberglass matt product with and inner layer of lead, either 1” or 2” thick.
Also try “Hough Sonovinyl Supreme”. This uses a plastic inner layer instead of lead that just about as effective.
I’ve been around these products in high-end 48’-65’ sportfishing boats where the engine bays are lined with this stuff.

It made engine noises. I basically mirrored the fella in the previously posted YouTube video with a few exceptions. I replaced most of the rotten rubber return hoses back to the pump, and between the pump and filter. I found an old clicker pump and had just enough tractor diesel left in the can to prime the system and keep the end submerged in the can. After cranking her over quite a bit to purge the air from the injectors it was action time. A jumper to the glow plug connector and a bunch more cranking, a bunch of fire and petter out, it finally fired and ran like it should. For about twenty seconds. Before I could jump out and retrieve my phone for a video she’d already petered out again. So I got the next best thing, a picture of the barn full of 2 stroke diesel exhaust. By then the battery was low. So messed around with a few other things, put the air filter assembly back together, then tried again. After a few fire and dies the starter stopped. I’ll pull it and see what’s going on. I’m praying it’s a starter issue and not the much worse option…

 

Well I pulled the starter back enough I could hear the drive release. So I bolted it back up and had it trying to go a few more times before the drive gear gave up. This is going to be a challenge. I found one NOS on eBay for almost $500 and another’s from Wakusha for $430. Oof. I don’t have that kind of coin for this project just yet. I’ll take it to the local auto electrical shop to see if they can rebuild this. The thing is there’s already a repair to the tip of the housing and I don’t know what sort of quality that is. Regardless I’m dead in the water for awhile.
I did tow it up the hill to finally dung the inside out with the pressure washer. I probably should have led with that before pulling it into the barn. Ah well. Much more sanitary now.
