I don't understand why his shows a thick block and what Ron shows looks more like a drive flange. (Think like a drive flange is what I am getting at).

That thick block can't be part of the hub. Are you sure it isn't glued together and when painted it looks like one piece? The block looks to me like part of a Warn lock-o-matic hub.

That parts breakdown shows two different control knobs. Looks like one with screws, one without. Parts #6 and #17.

And the "wrench" (#22) looks like it's made to fit under the knob. Did you try prying just on the knob to expose the axle's snap ring? I'd try tapping some wooden wedges in there to keep from destroying it, but I'd say those knobs need to come off to expose the snap ring.

    Cutlas Bulldog ?
Clearly shows an axle snap ring.
As mentioned previously, there must be a seam to separate IMG_2852.JPG the main body.

After jpflat2a's parts manual breakdown, and looking closely at the photos in reply #21, you can see a parting line on the main Cutlass hub body that looks like about 3/16" from where it attaches to the spindle hub. The parts breakdown shows a gasket here too, but this one may have been assembled with only a sealer that has effectively "glued" them together. You might have to take a very small, sharp chisel to separate the Cutlass hub body. Then you will find the snapring on the end of the splined axle shaft retaining the guts of the lockout mechanism (and the 3/16" portion of the hub body).

The parts breakdown shows an apparent roll pin and keepers for the knob. The previous breakdown showed a hole in the one without the screws so that definitely explains the knob portion. The thick block now makes sense and it has to be glued/stuck together with the thin part. Looks like a pretty strong hub design. I wonder if a heat gun would be enough to soften whatever is holding it together?

Thank you Jim for posting that. :)

I little Jasco Epoxy Paint Stripper on the hub will probably show you the part line.

    Well done. And, un-broken!

You are going to like the forum...Nicely done. I was thinking of you today as I was out wheeling and a 79 CJ7 came by so we stopped and chatted. He was running cutlass locking hubs and I asked about them since I knew you were having this issue and I know nothing about them. I don't think his were this 'bulldog' style but wish I would have known this difference and would have taken a closer look. Learning something new everyday.
