I can think of a lot of worse places to have a broken EZ out/broken bolt on a Jeep.
Just consider it practice for next time.

The problem with having to drill and easy out is that it's very hard..........cobalt drill bit maybe , or take a small burr on a die grinder and try to grind it out of the way.........post a picture.

Too true. I have had worse.
My dad and son have some cobalt for an exhaust bolt they broke off on my son's Nova. I also read a masonry bit. Anyone tried that?

Last resort only , has a different angle on the tip and will tend to walk around and enlarge the hole as it resists biting into the hard easy out..........that is why I suggested perhaps using a high speed burr on a die grinder to try and eliminate the easy out first...........but without seeing it I'm just kinda of guessing what your up against........

are you going jeep hubs or internal spline .... I have a set of jeep inners and old bronco outers I can't use ..since I went 30 spline d30 .. the internal hubs that are WAY less trouble and way stronger .....

Ez outs are never to be used with a crescent wrench, use them with a T handled wrench.
Carbide spade drill will make short work of an ez out, doubt very seriously a cobalt drill will drill an ez-out since the ez-out is harder than the drill bit. Will more than likely break the drill tip. Masonry bit will work so long as you have every thing clamped down like in a mill, never gonna work by hand.

You may notice that the "chrome" is flaking off the hubs. Dangerous in a few situations, I had a few pieces stuck in my palms. Should I just remove it all and paint or leave unpainted?

I'd try to lose the chrome. Atlas get the flakes off with a wire brush.

That bolt looks like a bear. They are kinda tiny. I'd be pulling my hair out....what's left of it.

BTW, IH hubs? On a JEEP? " C'mon man!" :D

Like I said when I started this thread the axle was "free". Who knows what was thrown on it before I got it! I keep getting a different Warn P/N 9062.

Yep , that old Chrome has bitten me before also...............So the "Easy out" is in the center of that cavity where the old allen bolt use to be?..........I would try grinding a little flat spot on the easy out first to get a point where the drill bit will at least hold and try to center itself.........start with a small bit first, if not once it wobbles around some that part is destroyed.

I do have some used covers like that around here somewhere.........rough but the holes are good.

If you can get this apart without completely destroying the cap, but still can't get the broken screw out, I've been running one with 5 of the 6 screws for 20+ years now without issue. I figured I'd fix it if it ever gave me an issue.

Now the cap will probably fly off when I go to plow again this weekend.

    Thanks Tarry,
I may have one from my D27 in my trail parts box. Are they interchangeable? If not I need to get up there and check out your build anyway!
I got it off but messed up the cap a little. I sort of drilled through the cap. The comment above makes it seem like that may be OK. The bigger concern is I can't move the cap from 4x2 to 4x4, it is completely frozen.
    Cap:

Making progress. I think I need to take off the "Kingpins" to get the rest off.

On a side note I found a local dealer that carries Timken bearings!!(y)

Which "rest of it?" Remove the spindle and the axle shaft should come out to get to the u joints. That looks like a ball joint knuckle vs. a king pin knuckle like the Dana 27 is.

Yes I did not know the proper term but found it after. Thinking I should replace the ball joints too.

Center drill it before you try to drill it out. Or use a spade drill from the start. I can get that out pretty easily.

    Carbide spade drill.
