Not nearly as much progress last night as I had hoped would happen, but progress was made.
When we bought Steve's jeep the PO had already installed the front under seat tank and a valve to switch between the front tank and the stock 1971 rear tank.
The PO used a cutting torch to open up a lovely hole in the floor riser between the seats. The valve did not provide for a fuel return to the selected tank.
Steve had plans of installing a new 6 way valve and purchased it several years ago. I was fortunate to find it in the pile of part that came with the jeep.

    5/16" supply, 1/4" return

New valve installed between the seats, same location as my jeep.
This valve selects front, rear and off.

Before starting on the valve I gave the rear axle a good steam cleaning and set it out to dry.
To wrap up the rear axle got a nice heavy, runny coat of black paint.
I was not going to paint the axles and other used parts that I installed..... but assembling fresh clean parts in a hurry seems to be less stressful than dirty, grimy parts.

Here is my invoice from 2003 for the axles. I know others in our club have had them made from this info. I was very satisfied with them, never broke one, knock wood, (Kyle). For the record, they went into the stock offset 44 housing from my 3B, I machined D30 spindles to fit the ends of the housing, and took about 10 thou out of the middle to get them through. I also made a trail spare spindle, and carried old straight floater axles as spares, because they lay flat and travel well. I ran D27 hubs, stock wheel bearings packed in grease. I think studs would be stronger holding the shafts in, but never had a problem with torqued and loctited grade 8 bolts. Also, I use '76 K5 D44 front inner axle seal, for the application for the outer axle seal. Anyway, I hope this helps anyone that wants to have Moser make them. I noticed there is an item ID on the invoice, not sure if that is what they would want, but I'm sure you could send this info and they would love to help you.

Last night was allot of little things.
First off I re-packed the front wheel bearings and rear floater bearings. Sorry, no phone touching during wheel bearing packing fun!
New seals were installed in the hubs at the same time.
Trash canned the aluminum caster shims and installed a set of Warrior Products 6 degree shims.

Half of the body mounts were missing on the jeep.
Not sure why they aren't there, can't exactly ask Steve what the deal is.....
The body mounts that were still in place, round 5/8" puck style, were in rough shape. I opted to install new Energy Suspension 15/16" tall body mounts. The minor bump in body lift will really help the sheet metal clearance around the transmission and transfer case.

Most of the evening went toward repairing the body mount location on the drivers side at the rear floor riser, right behind the under seat gas tank.
The mount was collapsed and bent upward with the 3 layers of sheet metal separating. Additionally resistance welds at the vertical support plate that travels from the body mount up the riser were no longer attached.
I first clamped a piece of box tubing along the body seam/mount. Using clamps in various locations I was able to massage the body mount back to the proper location and weld everything solidly in place.

The new boomerang shackles from Ruff Stuff use 1/2" bolts, the stock shackle hangers use 7/16" bolts.
I picked up a piece of 5/8" OD-1/2" ID tube to make new bushing sleeves. The poly bushings in the stock shackle hangers were drilled out to a fat 9/16" hole..... AKA wollered the hole with a 9/16" drill bit. Before installing the bushing and sleeve I cross drilled the two of them through the middle.
The stock shackle hanger was then drilled and tapped 1/4"-28 for installation of a grease fitting.
A crack in the weld at the shackle hanger was also addressed.

Wrapping up the night I decided to order a replacement leaf spring for the right rear corner.
I have been wanting to carry a single main leaf on big trips like the Rubicon.
Rubicon runs are hard on leaf springs and the trail has claimed many main leafs!
The right rear spring was inverted a half dozen times or more due to the poor shackle angle. Looking at it on the floor, there is a definite bent location in the main leaf with paint flaking. All of the other springs have a nice tight arch, this one does not.
This main leaf will be harvested from the pack and carried as a spare.

No pictures from last night's work.
When I pulled Steve's jeep from the shipping container I did a fair amount of pressure washing. Before moving forward with this weekend's plans I figured it would be best to make sure the engine will run. A multi meter showed the battery was still charged so I hit the carb with a shot of starting fluid. The engine fired almost immediately and ran for the duration of the starting fluid shot.
This weekends plans can move forward!
While in town yesterday I was able to pop into the hydraulic shop and get the power steering pressure/ram assist lines made up. They are exactly the same as on my jeep!

With the jeep currently drained of all fuel, I am trying to get all of the welding around the tanks completed ASAP. The rear bumper/tire carrier thingy majig...... I had high hopes for it, but Steve didn't really put in the time required to make it a substantial recovery/tow point. Steve replaced the rear cross member with a piece of 4" channel. The rear bumper bolts on with holes through the channel. I welded a couple 1/4"x2" flat bar brackets to the C channel that extend up the frame and bolt to the frame with weld nuts. These are directly in line with the D shackles mounted on the bumper. While the rear bumper/tire carrier thingy majig still doesn't excite me..... it will be fine for now.
The rear outer corner body mounts were not attached and badly decayed. I welded some reinforcements on them and welded pads on the C channel rear cross member for the body bushings to sit.
Brackets were made for the PS cooler and welded to the front cross member.
Tie rod mount for the ram assist was fabricated and welded up; I didn't even damage the clamping bolts this time!

The front brake brackets and rear drums were cleaned up and painted.
I have a bunch of little things on order.... like leaf spring bushings..... that are preventing projects from getting checked off the list.
The pile of cleaned and freshly painted parts is getting huge... I feel like the whole thing could be slapped together in a single evening once a couple small items show up.
Hopefully this jeep will be mostly complete in the next 2 weeks..... I still need to do some service work on my jeep before the Rubicon trip!

Slow day at work today so I'll share pictures of what I did last night.
Here is the rear cross member/bumper 1/4"x2" that I added last night. As soon as it was complete I was disappointed with it.
Work was slow today so I snuck out and improved on last night's work.

The bracket as it was last night....... Just wasn't satisfied......

Today I started off and V ground the end of the 1/4"x2" flat bar and melted an additional 2-1/2" long piece of flat bar to the end.

I was satisfied with the connection of the flat bar to the frame, but wasn't really happy with the connection from the flat bar to the channel iron.
First I cut some gussets out of 5"x1/8" flat bar and bent them in the iron worker.
    Now we are looking fancy!!!

Yesterdays slow day at work transitioned in to a productive afternoon.
First off the rear bumper brackets were buttoned up with washers and a nice runny paint job!

Power steering cooler mounted and hoses run.
Nice thing about having two jeeps that are basically the same...... no need for mock up and fussing over where to place something......
I get to just walk over to my jeep and measure where exactly something should be mounted. On occasion I even improve upon a mounting location or bracket design!

For once I actually appreciated this gaping hole in the grill that the PO hacked in for a previous abomination of a power steering box install.

The rest of the ram assist install is held up by the front axle install...... which is held up by the leaf spring bushings that are in transit..... because my dumb a*@ allowed Summit to ship my entire order from Ohio...... :banghead:

Based on the condition of the fuel that was drained from the tanks..... color and smell were not right...... I decided that I better pop that ugly carb off and make sure there wasn't any varnish in it. While the carb and adapter were removed it was also a great time to give the intake a little love!
When the intake was installed Steve glass beaded it but did not give it any protective coating it constantly looked like crap...... Which was making me treat it like crap.
The heavy pressure washing cleaned it up fairly well. A can of brake cleaner and a small wire brush cleaned the rest up so it was ready for a coat of engine paint, and a coat of engine clear!
Beer in one hand, paint in the other......
Its amazing what hanging a new chandelier does for a haunted house.... Instant curb appeal!
Pretty crazy how much better this entire situation looks at the moment..... ;)

After an insane amount of cleaning I was able to get the old MC 2150 carb cleaned up pretty good.
It basically unrecognizable by the time I was done! Wasn't even a one beer job......!

This carb requires a bit more wiring than the standard carb setup.
I purchased this kit from a forum member who was never able to get it to run properly. That member eventually yanked the whole mess off and went back to his old carb setup.
First thing to do was spread the wiring out and see just what we were working with.

    First order of business.....
Remove all of the garbage from the wiring harness. This is the "tach filter" from the "H" place that made this kit.
While this engine is even fire and could run with this garbage in place........ I had bad luck with this filter on my odd fire kit..... Howell replaced one under warranty before I went the crank fire route.
Those 3 wire snips felt so good..... I treated my self to a cold brew as a reward!

This harness was wired for a 1 wire oxygen sensor and a filtered tach signal.
I un wrapped the harness and added a 4 wire heated oxygen sensor to the system, all crank sensor wiring was added at the same time.

All buttoned up it looks fairly propper!

With that out of the way I got to work on installing the wiring.
The wiring install took much longer than necessary. This jeep has a mix of factory wiring and some added wiring by Steve. I took the time to clean it all up and wrap it in convoluted tubing.

Fuel pump and filter in place.

Fuel supply and return lines routed.

    Crank sensor time!!!!!
This is pretty much a copy of the crank sensor bracket that is on my jeep. Guess this bracket is no longer a "one off" design since there are two now in existence. :sneak:

This fuel injection kit was built for a 304 V8 engine and equipped with chevy 305 injectors.
    Wrecking yard to the rescue!
A clean set of junk yard 4.3 V6 injectors were installed.

The prom chip in the ECM was also incorrect for the V6 engine.
Harris Tuning burned me a chip with the "Scalded Dog" tune. I highly recommend Harris tuning.

Last item on the list before attempting to fire was the oxygen sensor.

With everything installed it was time for the moment of truth..... will it run?
This video is the dead cold, very first start attempt.
Prior to starting the only things I did were build oil pressure and purge the fuel system. The fuel being supplied was coming from a 5 gal jug on the floor under the jeep.
It literally fired right up first attempt!

20 minutes into running on TBI.
Water temp came up to 180 and sat there the entire time. Verified with scanner than the coolant temp sensor matched the mechanical gauge and IR temp gun.
I tuned this jeep for Steve when he first bought it and we installed the MC2150 carb, since that time I have only worked on my odd fire engine......
All I can say is wow the even fire engine runs so smooth....
There are still a few minor tuning adjustments to work out, but for now this thing is a runner!

With parts delivery holding up installing the big ticket items I took the holiday to do a luxury modification.
The under seat fuel tank needed to come out in order to get the rock slider off of the drivers side. This was a perfect time to work on the creature comforts of this jeep.
Steve was an inch or two shorter than me and never really minded the seating position, I couldn't stand how the seating position felt.
Time for the classic fenderwell notch!
Both fenderwells have a small kink at the front of the roll cage mount..... wonder why......

With the fenderwell notched out and a small seat slider modification, the seat was able to go back about 4".

The seating angle however was way too laid back for my taste..... There's no gangster leaning going on while trail riding!
I chopped off the seat bracket riser and tilted the back of the seat up.

    Just like that!
We have a comfortable seating position in an early cj5!
Before the seating position mods you felt like you were sitting on the jeep, now you feel like you are sitting in the jeep!

    Passenger side time!
The passenger seat was always a problem for Steve. It would not latch consistently and it was impossible to remove it with a top on the jeep because it could not tilt forward enough without hitting the cage. The only time it did come out easily was when he rolled the jeep at 55 mph...... I remember him saying the passenger seat was laying in the street. :susp:

I started off and clocked the seat mounting tabs rearward about 1/4 turn to allow the seat to come out of the hinge slots within the confines of the roll cage.
Clocking the seat mounting tabs moved the seat aback about 1" and down just a tad.
2" was chopped out of the front mount and the seat was slid 2" back on the mount to get it even with the drivers seat.

The latch for the passenger seat was re worked and re located to function properly as well.

The seat relocation project was one of the "only if time allows" projects on the list. I am really happy I took the time to do that project.

Nice job! Totally worth the effort in my opinion. I also did both sides as I like the seats to be at the same height and position.

    Last night was bushing night!
With the arrival of my holiday stranded Summit order I was finally able to bolt the body down all the way around.

    Continuing with the bushings trend!
I covered this before, but I'll re cap it again.
Old Man Emu springs require Old Man Emu bushings!
Rocky Road does not supply the correct bushings with their Old Man Emu YJ spring conversion kit. The struggle of installing the spring bushings has been documented here on several occasions. I have no idea why Rocky Road intentionally supplies the wrong bushings with their kit. Given all of the other issues with their product the bushings are just icing on the Rocky Road :poo: cake!
The Old Man Emu shackle end bushings are thick and thin. The thin bushings would normally be used on the YJ frame shackle hanger. The thin bushings are used for the spring eye in this case. The thin bushings will match the RR shackle hanger width.

    Check this amazing stuff out!
If you use the proper bushing grease..... AKA food grade grease..... You don't have to even use a hammer to install the bushings...... you just push them in by hand!
No using a hydraulic press or vise to try and squeeze the bushing into the spring eye..... no swearing needed..... The bushings just install perfectly!
So take that Rocky Road..... or Rickety Road as 47v6 so eloquently named them.
If you are replacing your prematurely wore out spring bushings from Rocky Road, send them a little verbal love as you pound away with a hammer on your springs :poo:.

To wrap up the evening I bought a super awesome set of rock sliders from a member here. These sliders are very high quality and are the same as the set on my jeep.
First, the sliders were test fitted to the body and mounting holes were drilled.
Second, the rear edge at the fender round was ground to match.
Third, a perfect coat of gloss black paint was applied. I even sat my beer down so the paint job would come out good!
Kimball Midwest spray paint is every bit as good as the Rustoleum enamel that you buy in gallon cans!

On the topic of grease, I have seen white lithium grease as the proper lubricant for spring bushings. The regular stuff seems to degrade the bushings.
