As others have said, the shackle angle is a little more vertical than might be ideal...If the springs are new, with a bit of use, they might settle down just a bit an improve the angle a little.

Increasing the shackle angle will soften the ride a little bit by giving an amount of mechanical advantage to the springs’ flex as they compress. Right now they’ll just act as a hinge, but if they had a little more rake, they’d also act as a pry bar, pushing the eyes further apart as they compress.

But… with the short stock shackles, and the high-arch springs, it’s a bit of a gamble moving them back any further. Go a hair too far, and you run the risk of the shackles popping past horizontal. Especially as the bushings wear in (or wear out). You’d really have to make sure your bump stops are set correctly.

If it were me, I’d probably move them in a half inch or so, but I’m a sadist when it comes to that kind of stuff. I’d probably advise you to leave it where it is.

I sorta remember bolting them in place too, no?

    So what was the noise?

You're right, the brackets are bolted in place. You have a good memory!

That's an overwhelming reason for me just to weld the brackets where they are. I haven't figured out the bang, then thump, thump noise. I was so concerned just making it back to the house, I ignored it. I will report when I find out.

Previous owner didn't have gaskets between the assemblies, he had some kind of glue, any suggestions on what to use when reassembling? Would that be just gasket glue?

Paint dried on the frame, so I started on the final assy. All the mods are done for the Land Rover Disco 1 axles and the assy went well.
I then torn into the 87 Mustang E7TE 5.0HO engine. everything looks good, so I did the valves and honed the cylinders and ordered new rings, rod and main bearings. I then cleaned and painted most of the parts and mocked it up while waiting for parts.
It's gonna be one Wild Willys. I streached the frame from 81" to 93" and the track width is out to 67" 302/5.0L HO Mustang engine with top loader 4 speed and D18 t/c

I've been wanting to drive the 3b around so at lunch I called a few sheet metal shops, found one that had the piece of aluminum I needed, bought it and made another top, then aired up the tires. We'll see if this top survives the storms. I used 8 hose clamps this time instead of zip ties.

Pulled the transfercase, again..I didnt get a good seal between the tcase and transmission so it did a good job distributing undercoating in CO.
Meanwhile I thought in CO the output had picked up some slop. I just rebuilt this damn thing and painstakingly set the end play. Close inspection reveals the yoke bottoms out and leaves the splines proud. Didnt catch this before. :mad:This leaves the yoke with a few thou slop. Wondering if the loading and unloading is what wiped out the previous output bearing. 36115.jpeg

Endplay was painstakingly set at .002 when i rebuilt this thing. After run in just on the light side of .003.
Not sure how big of a deal this yoke thing is. Gonna check out another one, I could leave it but the slop doesn't leave me warm and fuzzy feeling.

I finally put the air pump back together. The problem was the piston was hitting the top plate. So I drilled a pocket in the top plate to accept the screw that was hitting, the only way that could have happened is if the wrist pin stretched or if it is mounted on an eccentric, but everything looked tight. To check the piston mount would require a complete pump tear down, and I am not up to that. For now the pump is quiet and pumps up to 120 psi which is to what the limit sw. is set. so all is good. :coffee:

What I would do (remember I'm a bit cheap)
wide washer under the nut torque and see if it goes away.

My O/A mainshaft in my t90 is maybe 40thou long in the splines. Not an issue with the overdrive but the normal t18 input gear wouldn't tighten up. I had a 6spline washer and matching round washer cut from 16ga (.060") together they clamp er good. The splines weren't really needed if you can get a shim around the splines.

I thought that washer was a standard part? Every D18 I ever had came with it.

I was thinking more of a shim that goes around the splines but still rests under the normal washer.
Here is my best picture on file (ignore the metering rods I don't have those no more)

My first thought too. However a shim up front pushes the yoke too far back. The bolts passing from the back of the ebrake drum contact the output housing when you are torqued up and the clearance on the ebrake shoe width is suspect.
After you clean the setting silicone off the splines  a shim between the speedometer gear and yoke works well, with new silicone on the splines...

How lose, tight are your shackles, can they move?

I would leave everything as is, If the springs are new they will relax.
